Im debating between AP stats and Chinese 4, need to pick out of those
my other classes are:
physics
precalc
ap chem
ap gov
world lit
At most schools Chinese 4 is an AP class, it is not there? Is it the following year?
Future academic interests?
we dont have ap chinese
computer science
@hithesh My S ran into this similar dilemma his junior year. AP stat or Spanish 4 honors. What he did was call the school he was most interested and asked them the question. They only required 2 years of a language so he opted to take AP stat and Spanish 4 (non honors). His guidance counselor explained the scheduling conflict in a letter that accompanied his college application. Basically saying he qualified for Spanish 4 honors but due to conflict in class offering times he could not take it. In hindsight, not sure if that was the correct choice but he did wind up getting accepted to that school which was his first choice.
Take whichever is more interesting for you. With that said, I would counsel that if you are truly interested in Chinese and think you’ll continue in college, a year off would be inadvisable bease you will lose a bit by not using it. It’s unlikely that deferring a stats class for a year would present the same problem.
I’d take whichever you prefer, whichever has the better teacher.
AP statistics will not help you fulfill any requirements for a CS major. You will probably have to take a calculus-based probability theory or statistics course in college.
Note that some colleges have higher foreign language requirements for graduation than for admission. So reaching level 4 instead of level 3 of Chinese language may allow you a higher placement in college Chinese language courses, so that you can complete the requirement in fewer courses (leaving more room for other electives). Or if you want to continue to greater proficiency in the Chinese language, taking level 4 now will help.
I would say take Chinese- Stat is easily learned in college but unfortunately languages are quickly lost if you take time off
