AP class questions

My daughters school has some AP classes which last one semester and others which last two semesters. On transcript the two semester AP classes receive a grade for each semester. They are not averaged together. So here are my questions. Does a two semester AP class count as 2 APs to a college or just count as 1? Also when the are recalculating gpas UGA and other school add one point for an AP class. So an A in the class gets a 5 instead of a 4. Since her year long AP classes have a grade each semester on transcript and she has an A both semesters will she get two 5’s or just one 5 when they recalculate? Hope this makes some sort of sense. Thank you for any input.

I doubt AO’s are literally counting AP classes, more just eyeballing the transcript. But it’s one class.

One year long with a 5 or two one semester classes with a 5 works out the same way. GPA conversions are generally based on Carnegie units, so unless the college caps APs for grade conversion, it really does not matter. But short answer - one.

I guess my confusion comes in that we are block schedule with only 4 classes a semester. Each semester has end of semester grades. Colleges here in Georgia add a point or half point to an AP class. What happens if a kid gets a B semester one but an A semester two? Perhaps they average the two semesters together? I’m trying to figure out how to calculate my daughters GPA for Uga and GaTech but can’t do that without knowing if I count each semester as an individual grade. So if she got a B semester one that would be a 4 and an A semester two would be a 5. I’m probably making little sense but truly am not sure how to do this when it comes toe AP classes that last two semesters and have two separate grades on transcript.

That’s called burying the lede.

In this case, each semester course (in theory) will count as one course, although it is rare (but not unheard of) that an AP course would span 2 semesters.

In the case of UGA, they answer the question for you.

Schools that don’t run on a block schedule have most AP courses running two semesters but it only counts as one AP course for college credit. The exception would be AP Physics C because there are two components and two corresponding AP tests.

As far as your GPA calculation, if you are instate for UGA, have your child ask their guidance counselor. I’m sure they would know. Otherwise follow the advice above.

In terms of high school GPA calculation, a high school course that is two semesters long with two grades counts as twice as much as a high school course that is one semester long with one grade. (But it can get more complicated if you take courses at more than one high school, take college courses while in high school, or the high school changes to or from something like block scheduling.)

In terms of AP scores, you would get one AP score each, but credit and/or advanced placement may range from 0 to 3 semesters worth of college courses, depending on the specific AP test, score, and college/department policy.
