AP Classes and Self-Studies

If scheduling goes as planned for me, I will be taking these AP's for my final two years of high school: Junior- Physics 1, US History, and English Language; Senior- Stats OR Calc AB, European History, Biology, Spanish Lang, English Lit.

I'm also planning on self-studying some AP's because I just love to learn, and I also want to get as much college credit as possible. The college I'd like to go to is not extremely hard to get into so I looked at their AP Exam Course Equivalency chart and made a list of the APs that I could take to get credit for a Gen Ed requirement. This is the list I came up with: Art History, Psychology, Spanish Lit, and two of the following three: Human Geography, Macro/Micro Economics.

Any advice on what I should/should not self study and/or what year to study them and take the exam? All help is appreciated! Thanks in advance for any replies.

Well, which general education requirements do you hate the most? :stuck_out_tongue:
Look at the courses your college commonly offers in the fields for which you have to meet a requirement. Do any of the classes look particularly interesting to you? If so, you may as well fulfill that requirement once you get to college. (The AP course offerings are pretty limited compared to what most colleges offer.)
Do any of the subjects look pretty universally boring? Those are the ones for which you should self-study an AP test.

I think Art History and Spanish Lit would be harder to self-study than the others, unless you have prior knowledge of them.

@halcyonheather That’s what I thought. My school does offer an Intro to Art History semester course. Would that be useless though, for studying for the AP exam?

Spanish Lit would be very difficult to self study due the massive reading list the College board has. You need to be extremely good at essay writing, and be able to ascertain the nuances of the prose and poetry. My guess is you will not have skill set since you wouldn’t have completed Spanish lang first.

I don’t know what your Intro to Art history covers, but AP covers from pre-historic to modern times, Western and non-Western art. It’s a lot of memorization.

Hmm, I’ll have to think about it then. I most likely won’t take Spanish Lit then, and I’ll leave Art History as a maybe. Would it be super difficult to self study 2 AP’s each year considering how many actual AP classes I’ll be taking? And is Macro or Micro supposed to be easier?

Micro and Macro are relatively easy to self study. I’m not sure what colleges you are looking at, or what your goals for the future are, but I would do Calc over stat. As to whether it will difficult to self-study given your schedule, only you can answer that based upon what else you have going on. It will probably be easier your junior year.

My goal is to get a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and go to Medical School, so I know that Calc would be preferable over Stats, but I’d really rather take Calc in college. I’m in Algebra 2 Honors this year (sophomore) and I’m not doing that well. Not horrible either, but a low B. For this reason I think Stats will be better for me. I’m pretty set on my schedule, I just don’t know what I’ll do for self studying.
