AP Classes and Tests

I am planning on applying to UC Berkeley. I was wondering how many AP classes is a good amount for those that are going to apply for UC Berkeley or any other UC school and whether or not failing one or two AP tests will make a big impact when it comes to signing up for colleges and college admissions.

AP test scores are not considered in admission decisions only the grades you get in the AP classes. AP tests will be used to determine if you receive college credit.

There is no “magic” number of AP’s to take. It will be dependent upon how many AP courses your HS offers and what your HS considers a rigorous course schedule.

D got in with 6 AP’s (all A’s). The scores on the AP’s are more about giving you the ability to fulfill requirements (placement tests or undergrad pre-reqs). She used some tests to fulfill pre-req classes, but not all of them.

TBH, I think it not only has to do with the # of AP’s your school offers, but also how you stack up with others in your school. At a more competitive high school, 8-10+ AP’s would be the benchmark for the top kids.

I would pick the number of AP tests that you feel you can be successful at (grade-wise) without sacrificing your overall GPA. There is a lot of focus on test scores, but really, you may wind up going to a school that either doesn’t let you out of ANY classes despite 5’s on AP tests (Stanford) or taking the subjects again anyway in college because it’s recommended or you feel need to a refresher.

I might be wrong, for some classes, I thought Stanford would take 4’s or 5’s. I think UC Berkeley, UCLA and USC accept only 4’s or 5’s for some courses. Other UC’s will even accept 3’s.

I was accepted into UC Berkeley early this year (Class of '22). I took 12 AP’s total. I didn’t get straight A’s for these though, nor did I pass every test. I think the biggest factor is how well you utilize the “resources”/“courses” that are offered at your school!

@UCBUSCalum Yeah, bad example - my info on Stanford was incorrect. They take 4’s and 5’s, and they don’t take all classes (i.e. Lang, Lit, and Bio).
