AP Classes for senior year

I was planning on taking 5 AP classes ( AP Calc AB, Stats, Lang, Physics 1 and Gov) but now I think it may be too much because I have to do College Apps and prepare for the Oct SAT Reasoning Test. I can have up to 8 classes max and currently have 6 (5 APs and 1 non AP elective) classes and 2 early releases/open blocks. Would it be bad to drop an AP class (AP Gov) and have 3 open blocks with only 5 classes?

I have only taken 3 AP classes (AP Chem, Econ and Psych) before, all in junior year, and the course load was alright.

It all depends upon your your GC will rate your schedule on the Secondary School Report. If the revised schedule warrants a “most demanding” you’re OK; if it’s rated less than that, I would rethink. Regardless, ask your counselor.

I don’t think those 5 in particular will be that demanding.

It’s definitely doable but you want to ensure you’re taking a very rigorous schedule.

You should be fine with 4 AP classes, unless most of the students at your school take many more.

I don’t want to drop my GPA (4.0) or at least not by much.

Most importantly, would taking 1 less AP class really change the way an admission’s officer looks at me? I don’t plan on going to Ivy League schools. I’m thinking of applying to Oregon State University, Drexel, and Illinois Institute of Technology.

It is really up to you. Most of these 5 AP classes are not too challenging. If you handled the 3AP last year without any burden, you should be fine with these 5. Having 3 open blocks may be too much. Ask your GC about it.

AP Physics will probably be hard, the rest should be alright to handle. AP classes will actually help your GPA since it is weighted more and increase your weighted GPA.

Perhaps I am underestimating their admission standards, but for the schools you listed, I think taking 4 APs would be perfectly fine, especially if you maintain a 4.0.

Don’t count of the wGPA. The admission stat is mostly uwGPA. You don’t want to get anything below A- if you are aiming high.
