AP classes to Davidson?

How does Davidso view AP classes?

Do they want you to pour them on?
Or maybe are they more inclined toward "take what you want-just pass the final"

I'm taking advanced courses, including 2 APs, but avid CC-ers make me feel like a slacker haha :-(

haha yes they encourage AP classes. Check out their website some, may want to email an admissions councilor. I think doing well in tough classes (AP or IB) is kinda a big factor. They also have their own AP credit policy if your interestedi n that.

I think it's definitely a good idea to enroll in the most challenging curriculum that your high school offers, if you're up to it. I know it sounds stupid to take classes that are so often taught to the test when you could take more interesting courses, but...it counts, both toward admissions and also (you'll love this) you get to use FOUR of your AP credits toward your requirements. Like, basically you just need a 4 or 5 on most things and then you're done with that requirement, usually when you get here. Some APs don't really count for credit...AP English Lang doesn't do much; AP Statistics is nothing; etc.
History requires a 5, but Calculus (in either AB or BC) only requires a 3 or above and then you're out of math classes forever! If you so choose, that is.

haha I love the liberal arts curriculum and feel, it's definitely what I'm looking for, but you can't help but be a little upset that so much AP credit won't be worth anything (with a limit policy like 4 at Davidson)

Yeah...I wish it could be more than four. I would be done with ALL of my requirements. But it does allow you to get a semester ahead, and keep in mind, most "good" colleges don't accept AP credits, period. Most of the Ivy Leagues don't take APs, and the ones that do will not if you made less than a 5. Most of the other top liberal arts schools are the same way. So, it's not what you'd be getting at a state school in terms of credit or placement, but it's still relatively generous.

AP classes are important.. But I also think Davidson takes well-rounded people into consideration. Sure--you could take 10 APs and get all 5s and that would be nice.. but if you don't do anything else with your life, Davidson isn't going to be interested.

Also, if you're going to take APs and not do well in them.. It's probably better to take Honors or CP and get an A than to take an AP class and get a C.

Leadership positions (captain of sports teams, president of organizations, running community service initiatives) are incredibly important, as are special talents (a kid on my floor is a championship ballroom dancer).

If you're spending your spare time doing something productive, fulfilling and interesting rather than locked in your room doing homework all day, Davidson will like you (and you'll fit in better with a student body that is very much work hard-play hard).

PS. take into account that the people most likely to share their grades on college confidential are those that are particularly proud of them, thus the sample gives an incredibly skewed perception of the aggregate.

Okay, I will surely take this into consideration when it comes time to pick senior schedules. I tentatively picked 2 AP classes as a sophmore because I wasn't sure how much work I could handle, in addition to volunteering and sports. My school might get 7 classes next year, so thats another potential quality credit class.

I also take into consideration the teachers. There are 14 AP classes available at my school (One of which is IB only so I can't take it :( ) , but there are not many good teachers for these classes. I picked the ones I knew could teach ( English Language & Composition and Environmental Science). I didn't really want to take the risk. But out of 7 (possible) classes for next year, I've decided more or less on four of my classes : AP Biology, AP Spanish Language, Calculus H. , and AP Literature :/

Question though: Only 4 of your AP classes are taken at Davidson? Do you pick which 4?

Re-read my original post and definitely laughed at my hurried typing, haha. Where do you want to go? Davidso. Very cool. >_<

Two as a sophomore? That's plenty! Most people aren't allowed to take ANY as a sophomore. Then others are encouraged to take many as a freshmen. It really just depends on your school, but generally speaking, I would say that's fine! I think I took one (only one was allowed) sophomore year, two junior year (we were allowed three, but I didn't see myself doing well in AP Physics), and six senior year (we were allowed four, but I begged haha).

You pick which four are taken, yeah. I didn't want to HAVE to take a history, so I used my 5 on AP US; I had other pre-college credits from College of Charleston, so I used those for my two social sciences (sociology 101 and political science 201 or something), and my 5 on AP Spanish because I didn't want to take a language while at Davidson. I wish I'd passed the Calc exam.

Oh no, haha, I am a junior and my school is (was) the same. After I entered sophmore year they offered AP classes to underclassmen. I was mad. They had just started offering AP Human Geography when I was a sophmore, but I didn't want to take a class that had never been taught at my high school (knowing my high school). In the end I was so glad I didn't cause only one kid out of like...40 passed. They just started offering AP World History to sophmores...now that I'm a junior. I would have loved to take that last year, but yet again I would have had a terrible teacher. I don't think I'm going to be as bothered by this next year, as I realize that passing the AP exam is pretty much solely the individual.

Now my school is like this:
freshman year- 1 (Human Geography)
sophmore year- 2 (Human Geography and World History)
junior & senior year- unlimited

haha somehow I got confused about this recently. so its four AP courses for credit, which is like 12ish credit hours?

Ah…I don’t even know what credit hours are. Basically, it’s a semester’s worth of credit. You’ll take four classes each semester, unless you’re crazy and want to take five.

So I am thinking of:

AP English Literature
AP Biology
AP Spanish
AP Psychology

for senior year  my school just started offering ap psych and ap micro this year…but I’m thinking those 4 are pretty solid in studying cough biospanish

im sure every school is different, but our psych and econ classes aren’t that hard and didnt require much studying at all compared to some ap classes (bio, us history, etc). neither of ours even had textbooks. so those two might be easier in general lol just fyi

Okay cool :)

I wish my school had good AP teachers haha…the only good one we have is the APES teacher, who is so organized she has her own website xD
