today i got my senior year schedule and was a but surprised by what i saw. Initially i was taking all ap classes next year however my school had me in honors latin 4. Upon contacting my school i found out much to my dismay that ap latin 4 and ap physics 2 were taught during the same period and were only taught during that period so i could only take 1. So instead of 7 ap next year i only have 6 and 1 honor class. Is there anyway i can convey to the colleges that i apply to that i would have jumped at the oppurtunity to take both but my schedule wouldn’t allow it. I really dont want to come off as unambitious(yes i know 6aps is still alot but you can never be too careful with schools like ivies). Thanks
Just don’t mention it, it’s not a big deal. If you mention it, you risk looking obsessed with academics, which is a negative when it comes to admissions at top schools.
You could ask your guidance counselor to note in his/her recommendation that due to a scheduling conflict you could not fit in ap latin senior year. This stuff happens all the time - it even happened to me years and years ago when I was in HS. You schedule sounds plenty rigorous.
Dude 6 APs is a lot… like A LOT. My school doesnt even allow me to take more than 4 APs in a year.
This is too trivial to mention and, as others have said, sounds obsessive. Your guidance counselor is required to evaluate the academic rigor of your coursework compared to 1) what the school offers and 2) what other students at your school do. Presumably, you fall into the ‘most rigorous’ box, which is exactly what the GC will check off. If you have any questions about that, talk to the GC. But frankly, one honors vs AP isn’t going to get you in or keep you out of anything.
Definitely have your guidance counselor write a note telling of the scheduling error. Once the colleges know about the scheduluing issue they will not care. 6 AP classes is plenty enough anyway tho.
Well, it’s not an error, it’s a conflict. Personally, I don’t think it’s even worth mentioning, but if your GC thinks it’s important, s/he can mention it on the Secondary School Report. Under no circumstances should you mention this in your app; there is absolutely no way you can communicate it without sounding whiny.
Having said that, if the conflict is between AP Physics 2 and AP Latin, I’d opt for AP Latin; if you’re applying to top colleges, AP Latin is more likely to earn credit than AP Physics 2. Although, either way, your schedule would still be rigorous enough.
On the other hand, if you are trying to apply to a top STEM college, i would go with the AP Physics 2.
If you already have AP Physics 1, I agree that AP Latin would be more beneficial, especially if that frees up a period for you to take another class (can even be a “fun” class like cooking, choir, or current events!)
@skieurope my intended major is business so neither class is particularly relevant. However my latin teacher somewhat discouraged me from taking ap because last year i was in regular latin 3 and usually you have to be in honors latin 3 to even be considered for ap, however i had a stellar year and never dropped below an a+. That being said my latin teacher still said that i might be behind on some of the topics
@mat324 OK, as I said, either option is rigorous enough.
Presumably Latin AP at your school is a slightly more rigorous or faster paced version of Latin 4, if either can be taken after Latin 3. So the difference may not actually be that huge in terms of how much Latin you will learn. You may still be able to do well on the Latin AP test if that is your intent.
