Will taking 2 or 3 more APs greatly help me get into college? I was planning on taking Ap Environmental and AP Comp Sci. However, I got put on the wait list and never got in. I would really prefer to take these classes, but if it will really help me to take more APs I am willing to take AP Biology, AP Stat, and possibly Ap French. Currently, I am only taking Ap Lit and Ap Government.
AP classes will help in college admissions since many colleges will look to see if you are challenging yourself in your HS classes (course rigor). Is getting into a college dependent upon taking AP classes, the answer is no but it will also depend upon which colleges you are targeting. HS course rigor is a huge consideration in the top schools.
My advice to both son’s was to take the AP courses that interested them, which led to better grades instead of taking AP classes they felt they had to take to compete with their fellow students.
There isn’t any ONE thing that is going to makes or break most admissions decisions.
Taking AP courses shows that you have taken the most rigorous courses that your school offers; but you don’t necessarily need to do that in every subject area every year. The more selective the colleges you are considering, perhaps the more important to be taking what your GC would consider to be the “most rigorous”. And depending on your intended major area (STEM vs Social sciences vs Humanities, etc) I think you certainly want to take the most rigorous in your particular area of interest/talent. If you can add one or more APs this year, great. And you can probably take more next year. It’s good to show that you are willing to take on the challenge of the most rigorous courses, but it is also important to do well in them. So don’t overload on APs if you have concerns about doing well. Your activities and life outside of school are important too.
are you a Jr or Sr?
Senior
how many AP classes have you taken so far? Which ones have you taken?
How many did you take last year?
And is your French good enough to take AP French?
10th grade: AP World History (Only Ap available for sophomores)
11th grade: AP US History, AP Lang, AP Psych
12th grade: AP Lit, AP Gov (the classes I am enrolled in thus far)
All in all, I have taken four AP classes. My French is okay, but the teacher for AP French is relatively lenient on grading.
Did you get A’s in those AP classes? If so ,and
if you are NOT already taking a science class or can switch to AP Bio I would - that is if you have already taken intro Bio.
What math classes have your taken/ are you taking now?
How many years of French have you taken?
The Idea here is NOT to take as many AP classes as possible- there is no prize given by colleges for most # of AP classes.
it is to take the AP classes that you can do GREAT in.
or as another poster wisely advised above
