Hi!
So I was just wondering if any of you have taken an online class of AP Computer Science, which is what I’m considering.
I am not that experienced with the more complex areas of computers, like programming.
I know what an average student would know in the modern days… Haha.
My school only offers it as an online class at home, so I was just wondering if it is really difficult to learn (for someone who is inexperienced).
Thank you!
It actually doesn’t have a lot of info. There is is a learning barrier in the beginning learning to use code, and then another later when things become more object oriented, however once you get past these, it’s relativity easy and fun at times!
@BananaCreamDream Thank you so much! I was a bit worried about this… Programming seems quite difficult (since it’s like learning a whole new language and that). But it’s good to know that it gets easier.
@sonnet18 It basically is. But once you understand the logic and how the program works and what the keywords mean (like private, public, static, switch, synchronized, etc.), Java becomes easier, and learning other programming languages becomes easier.
@MITer94 Thank you so much!
I took AP CS A online through FLVS and it was too easy. I got A/A and finished the class in 1.5 months. Downside is that I am not confident that I will pass the exam.
@Gatortristan That’s pretty amazing. Did you have any background in more advanced computer science? Like programming, or software design, etc.
I’m glad to hear that, though. I was a bit worried that it would be too advanced for me.
Sorry, this is late, but since this is a thread for AP CS, I have a few questions.
- Do you need to have prior experience of coding to take AP CS?
- In addition, what is the bare minimum I would need to know about CS?
My school does not have an actual class for AP CS, so I will have to take it online. My counselor has told me that only a few students who have taken the course have passed. Most who took APCS knew a lot about computer prior to taking the course.
@Gatortristan So you took the online class and it was easy? I will be taking GaV, and I am scared that I will be lost.

Hi @candylover2015 From what I know, AP Computer Science is fine even for those who don’t have that much prior experience. I haven’t been able to contact my teacher regarding that, but if you are truly worried, try some coding online. I believe AP Computer Science uses Java.
@Gatortristan did say that it was fairly simple. I don’t know. Seeing as I can’t really contact my possible Computer Science teacher at all, I have my worries as well.
Can you let me know if you learn anything about the complexity of the course?
@candylover2015
- No.
- Nothing.
Some people are wired for CS, and some people are not. It helps to be a logical thinker and a problem solver, since that’s what programming is all about.
@sonnet18 Thanks for replying! I took a cs101 online course… I hope that will help. So far, everything is really simple. Not much to it. I am only on week 2 out of 8, so not much progress.
@"Keasbey Nights Thank you for the answers. I guess I will do fine in cs. Logical thinking and problem solving seems to be what I like to do… since I am decent at math
@candylove2015 This sure is relieving. Since we both don’t have much experience in anything computer, it’s good to know that we won’t be at too much of a disadvantage.
Thank you @"“Keasbey Nights” !
