After we finish AP Computer Science, I believe that it would look incredibly good on college apps if we apply what we learned during the course and create some sort of open source project or mobile application. Before I begin coming up with any ideas, I would like to know if there are any others, who feel like they want to do more than just simple console program :) And of course this only applies to people that are considering majoring is CS.

Just remember Sean Park and Sean Fanning were not much older than us when they created Napster.

Except Napster was created 15 years ago, well before kids typically were programming.

I personally found ways to do my own side projects. I have a fantasy football website with 3 back end content management systems and 150 users that I coded completely and fully by myself in HTML/CSS/PHP/SQL. Obviously not Java/ a C variation, but I got a custom acceptance letter that mentioned the website so it certainly had an effect. I think if you believe you have the ability, it can be done / will look more impressive if you do it alone. That said, from a practical standpoint, group projects are an important part of the CS world as that is what any major project is.

Ya I agree there are pros and cons to each. But, I also want to just works with others, and if I have to sacrifice small amount of “impressiveness”, I believe it would still be well worth it. But, then again, it is quite difficult to find others that are interested in high school.

I strongly suggest building a portfolio of web sites or apps to show to colleges. But you should remember that computer science and solely coding is quite different. Winning a competition in making apps/sites are definitely a strong push too.

Ya true, I was thinking of creating android apps. But now that you mention websites that sounds interesting too. Any suggestions/examples for websites that I could program?

The current popular meta for ideas for websites:
X (a currently popular website) for Y (certain group, or a thing)
Example: Facebook for dogs, instagram for cats

Otherwise I’d go through this: http://www.rddit.com/r/SomebodyMakeThis/ (replace * with e) You should contact the person, and ask for ellaboration and you can work out your site/app, while making a portfolio you can contribute to other people’s needs!

Good luck!
