AP Computer Science or Precalculus?

Alright, so I need four credits of math for college, and I dunno if I should take AP CS or Precalc, given that my high school labels both as math courses. I suck at traditional math courses (barely got a B in Alg2/Trig last year and took off a year of math this year) so would colleges care if I took CS instead?

Should I just call the individual universities and see their policies?

Precalc nuff said

Dude i ENVY your HS for allowing CS. I have to learn it online next year or take it at my community college.

I would take AP-CompSci, since i would think that it’s less of a traditional class than Calc, which i’m taking next year and heard it’s like your everyday math class but harder.

However, i might be a bit biased since I plan on majoring in CompSci heehee

Some colleges require Precalculus, while I don’t think ANY school requires AP CS. Pre Calc just opens up more doors for you. I would normally recommend AP CS, but in your situation, Pre Calc is the way to go.

To be honest I think I’ll just take Precalc so I’m not behind in college math courses… that’s what everyone is saying. But I think it’d be cool to learn how to program.

Oh yeah, and I will never use math at all. I’m majoring in poly science.

Dude, just pick up a dummies book and you will be on your way to program… The class does not go much far ahead of the dummies book.

I took an intro to programming Freshman year and was hooked. It’s like a secret art form :)

I would still take CompSci, since it gives you an insight into one of the most well-loved professions in the work force.

Also, why not take both :P

Haha I’m too lazy for that. It’d have to be a class.

And I don’t have enough space in my schedule.

I have been programming for 6 year. I know what it is like and how cool it is. But looking at the academic point of view, I highly suggest the Pre Calculus.

I have serious doubts that selective and very selective colleges that recommend 4 years of math for applicants would view “computer science” as a math course. It’s most often viewed as an elective. That your school views it as math doesn’t change that. If you think that I have this wrong I encourage you to ask one or two colleges what they think and recommend.

That you skipped math the past year already weakens your potential college application.

Take CS if you have an extra period but that in addition to Precalculus.

Pre-Calc. Its basically a pre-req for Calc, and Calc is very important. Plus most colleges like to see atleast Pre-calc.

They’re both good. If at all possible take both. But precalculus is core and you need it, so take that if you only get one course.

CS is actually pretty close to mathematics, but most wouldn’t consider it math.

Notice how surprised everyone is that CS is a math course at your school. I imagine adcoms would have the same reaction, and would penalize you for not talking precalc.

I wasn’t going to take Calc/a math class in senior year even if I had taken the class this year.

But thanks guys, looks like I’m taking precalc next year! Funnnn.
