AP courses in A-G or not?

Do AP courses count as a-g courses?

The UC App says for Courses Other Than A-G: Add and briefly describe any courses you have taken since ninth grade, other than those required for UC admission, that demonstrate a particular focus or interest.

Examples: an ROP nursing careers course, a Spanish immersion program, weekend Chinese school, a nontransferable community college course.

AP courses aren’t needed to admission, but do i put AP courses here or leave them out?
Thanks

Definitely add AP courses under A-G.

While AP courses are not required for admission, the subject matter is. For example, four years of English is required and if you take AP Lit your senior year… Also, UC counts how many a-g courses that you complete beyond the minimum requirements.

Transferable college courses also go under a-g.

If I study on my own and take an AP exam at the end of my senior, will it count towards a-g requirement? My high school does not offer “Visual and Performing Arts” courses. Suppose I study for the AP “Art History” exam on my own and take the exam, will it count towards the a-g requirement? I will be taking the exam next May though I am applying now.

No, if you only take the AP exam and not the course, you cannot list it as an A-G course on your application. You will, however, be awarded college credit at UCs for AP exams you pass with a 3 or higher whether you took the course or not.

I believe that by scoring a 3+ you will “validate” your knowledge of the material, which completes the admission requirement. See the question about a student who takes the Calc exam without taking the course.
