is calc required for a business minor? i know its not important for an anthropology or sociology major... right?

Calc is required for business majors, but they have their own special calc class and you don't have to take it with all the scientists and engineers. Dunno what the business school gives for AP credit.

There's another reason to go for pure elective credits from AP - the more credits you have, the more registration priority you have (earlier registration date)

So an extra 4 units could help a lot.

For foreign language test at orientation, what exactly are the foreign languages they test over? Does Korean count? Or is it just languages like French, spanish, etc...

This thread really makes me mad. My school requires the payment for the tests before by the 1st day of classes. Even after paying I still don't want to take a couple tests this year, but my teachers are claiming they will find out and dole out punishment.

I don't know any specifics on the foreign language placement exams but if you know a language they don't have a test for they'll make an attempt to figure something out so they can test you. I think for Korean you would satisfy the requirement but I don't know for sure.

@bill - if you don't want a refund you can take whatever AP exams you're required to take, then immediately cancel the scores for them the day after the exam by calling the college board. Supposedly it's just like never taking the exam in the first place so nothing on your record about it.

The registration priority thing is very true. It won't affect you your first semester, but after that, it is a big deal. My roommate who has the maximum number of credits got to register a day or two ahead of me, and I (who has about 20 units of AP credit), got to register ahead of other people. This is very, very helpful. It won't make sense now, but it will later.

To a different question, AP chem and bio will help you with the honors classes. Technically, you can sort of pass through the first semester, but it isn't recommended. All taking the test will mean is that you already know more about the subject than others in you class do, which is very important for the curve.

sucks you have to pay for your AP tests...my school pays for us, so im taking 6 this year 0=]

our school charges an extra $120 per AP course... and students are REQUIRED to sign up for the exams, otherwise the school switches them out of the class. lame, huh?

heck yeah it is, i wouldnt take any AP classes if my school didnt pay for them...im waaaay too poor =( good thing my high school is so rich 0=]

well whats even LAMER is that i go to private school... meaning we already pay tuition... so its like WHAT THE HECK!?!?!?

hahah that is so funky...especially since i go to a public school and its a crappy one too...so how many AP classes are you taking?

only two: AP calc and AP physics
(they don't offer that many courses, maybe 8 in all?)
so its not that bad for me ($240), but i feel bad for the kids taking 4 or 5..

i do too...i definitely wouldnt take any....but fortunately for me i can take them for free so i am taking 6 AP classes...that would be a ton of money =o

i've taken bio, us history, english language already, and i'm taking bc calc, english lit, spanish language, us government, macroeconomics, and psychology now. if i pass, that would give me 36 credits, but since they give 32 max, i can go in with 32 credits? i'll be a communication major.

yep, you'll have 32 units and have finished your category III G.E. Plus you'll probably do the spanish placement exam to hopefully waive foreign language.

jbusc, what's category III G.E.?
thanks

There are 6 general ed categories - category III is the main science requirement. So you would just have one more science GE to satisfy, the category IV.

Don't worry about this stuff too much, your department advisor will look at your info and tell you what requirements you still need.

So we will be able to register for certain classes earlier? I don’t understand.

If I am an engineering major, will having Bio and Chem help me?

How about Calc BC, can I skip it and go on to Calc III in the university without any problems?

And what is the point of elective credits if they don’t satisfy GE requirements?

Is earlier registration better because classes fill up earlier or something?

Note: Sic_infit pulled up a five year old thread, so please look for current info about AP credit on the USC website. This thread discusses credit for “3” on AP exams, for example, and USC no longer grants credit for scores of 3.

Earlier registration is helpful in getting a “nice” schedule. Classes generally don’t fill up (and if they do, USC will often open another section - though there are some exceptions of very popular classes), but if you register later you may end up with 8am sections or Friday sections. It seems most USC students prefer no Friday classes and nothing before 10am. You need an early registration appointment to accomplish that.
