AP Credit Clarification

Could someone explain what exactly the “2 AP Credit” policy means? I’m aware that AP credits don’t count towards the Areas of Knowledge and Modes of Inquiry. However, say I have AP credit in computer science, calculus BC and statistics. Could I use all three to place out of the lower level courses at Duke?

AP credit can be used to bring down the required course number from 34 to 32 for trinity and I believe 34 to 30 for Pratt. it can also be used for placement. Don’t take my word for it however you should definitely check the website

Unlimited AP credits can be used for placement. They wouldn’t want you taking an intro course unnecessarily. Honestly, pre-reqs are usually not that strictly enforced anyways – if you think you’re prepared for a course, nobody will stop you from registering (depends on the dept, admittedly). Only 2 APs in Trinity can count towards requirements both of the 34 total courses and the various curriculum reqs.

In both Trinity and Pratt you need 34 credits (classes) total and each AP counts as 1.0 credit, but you have a max of 2 in Trinity and unlimited in Pratt (however, Pratt has so many other requirements in the curriculum that can no way be taken in high school that the unlimited number of APs doesn’t really do all that much in progressing towards the degree – most people just place out of Calc I, II, and a science course).

I could be wrong, but I think all your APs still get put on your transcript but only 2 of them show a 1.0 credit next to them. I was in Pratt, so can’t say for sure what happens in Trinity though…I had like 6-7 APs listed on my Duke transcript with a grade of “AP” and a credit of 1.0 (i.e. they don’t affect your GPA, but do count as a credit a piece).
