I'm attending COE this fall as a first year student and I was just wondering what happens to my AP English credit? I got a 4 in AP English Composition and I'm debating whether or not i need to take the AP English Literature. I checked the website and it says I can get 3 credits with my 4 in AP English Comp. But would I get another 3 credits if I got a 4 in my AP English Literature?

You’ll get 1 semester of FWS credit for it.

I’m not sure if Engineering requires one or two semesters though. I think one, but if it’s two, I’d go ahead and take it, which could save you a big hassle. A lot of FWS are really good, but a lot of them are also really bad.

If you’re an engineer, you still need two semesters of FWS like everyone else. However, only a score of 5 will get you out of one FWS, and you can only get out of a maximum of one. You will still get an additional 3 credits of English, but either way you’ll have to take one semester of writing.

Hmm. I thought everywhere except A&S got a 4 as acceptable for credit. Mehbeh not?

No, Engineering requires a 5 to place out of 1 FWS.

A 4 will get you 3 credits, but you still have to take 2 FWS.

I stand corrected.

[Cornell Engineering : Advanced Placement Credit Table](http://www.engineering.cornell.edu/student-services/academic-advising/academic-information/ap-credit/ap-credit-table.cfm)

It says you only need a 4 to get out of one FWS.

But I didn’t know that if you do both Lang and Lit then you get 6 credits in total - I always thought that you can only get a max of 3 credits (even if you do both Lang and Lit).

@Aseyelum: So if you get 3 additional credits, that goes into the liberal distribution?

The website you posted clearly states:
Freshman Writing Seminar
(two seminars required)
one seminar 5 (English) (c)

Like I said earlier, you need a 5 to get out of one seminar.

If you get a 4 on one of them, you get 3 credits of ENGL credit (but not placed out of a FWS). If you get a 4 on both of them, you get 6 credits of ENGL credit (but not placed out of a FWS).

Okay, so if you get 5 on both of them, I assume you place out one FWS and get 3 credits (even though the website says you get 3 credits by getting a 4 =P)? lol

5 in both, place out of 1 FWS, Must take 2nd FWS, 3 credits given
5 & 4, place out of 1 FWS, Must take 2nd FWS, 3 credits given
5 in any one and only one attempted, place out of 1 FWS, Must take 2nd FWS, 3 credits given
4 & 4, Must take both FWS, 3 credits given
4 in any one and only one attempted, Must take both FWS, 3 credits given
Below 4 you geth nothing.

You only get 3 credits if you get 4 in both??

Believe so. 10char.

Alright that clears things up, thanks!
So looks like I wont take it since there’s no point.

so just to clear up whatever 2coll said: assuming one gets a 5 it is pointless to take both lang and lit?

sorry for the stupid question … i just want to make sure everything is crystal.
