AP Credit for Lang/Lit

<p>Penn is one of my top schools that I have applied to and I am eagerly looking forward to the decision letter in April. With this said, I am trying to plan my AP test schedule around what certain schools take credit for.</p>

<p>Last year I took AP Lang and received a 5 on the AP test. I am currently in AP Lit and I am unsure about whether or not I should bother taking the test. I am an excellent writer, but I am not into literature that much. Some of my friends have told me that if I get a 5 on the AP Lit test I will receive no additional credit as I have already gotten a 5 on the AP Lang test. This posses a concern as I would not want to spend $89 and 3 hours of my time to take an English test that will not benefit me with credit or exemption from college courses.</p>

<p>Is anyone aware of this? Would I benefit in terms of college credit from getting 5's on both Lang/Lit?</p>

<p>(By the way, I applied to the Engineering school)</p>

<p>They will only take one of those 5’s. And it will count as a “free elective” credit and fulfills nothing. If you come here, then you’ll likely end up in a writing seminar to fulfill the writing requirement.</p>

<p>Schools should have a website based on how they convert AP scores. Penn only accepts a 5 with the exception of languages I believe. I’m not sure how other schools do it, it really depends.</p>

I scored a 5 on AP Lit and AP Lang, and received two “English Free” credits that I can count toward free electives, etc. I am willing to send you a screenshot of my transcript showing both credits if necessary…MANY think you can only get 1 credit (because the name of the credit is the same), but you can get two.</p>

<p>Like I said, if you’re in the college, you’ll more than likely take a writing seminar to fulfill that requirement.</p>

<p>That has more information that is in regard to class of 2016 and I can’t imagine it changing too much for next year but you never know.</p>

<p>I don’t know of any college comparable to Penn that would let you use one of the English AP classes to get out of a writing requirement. Nor, frankly should you want to do that. It’s worth it for your career to take an actual writing course at a top college.</p>

<p>Many of them (maybe even most) will not even grant elective credit for the English APs. (They really aren’t equivalent to any actual college course, except for college courses that are effectively remedial high school.) You have to look carefully at the websites on a college-by-college basis.</p>

<p>I have read that these credits don’t count towards an English Major. Will they count towards an English Minor?</p>

<p>@MiniKitty: My main point was not on what these credits can count for (they do indeed count for free electives), but rather the fact that you can get both English Free credits instead of just one.</p>
