AP Credit for Prereqs?

I was wondering if AP credit can be used to fulfill a major prereq? I'll be a business major (looking at Haas, Marshall, UCLA biz econ) and I'll be taking calculus BC my senior year. A 3 on the exam would give me credit for calc 1 in my CC and a 4 or 5 would give credit for calc 2. If credit can be applied toward prereqs, would they look down on this at all? Do they prefer prereqs to be taken at a CC?

Also, does AP credit count towards your units as well? For example, if I got credit for calc 1 would I get 5 units?

Ok, in order to have the Ap course be used for the preqs at the Berkeley or UCLA you have to have the score on the exam that they want, CC accepts a lower score usually versus the UC. The UC usually wants a 4 or 5 to meet the requirement.

You will get the units the course is worth to the UC- it is not necessarly five.

here is the UCLA AP credit link

UCLA Undergrad Admissions: AP Credit - College of Letters and Science

So if you get a 5 you will get credit for 31A and 31B versus just generic credit for "calculus"

will my ap scores which are not 5s have the negative effect on my application? Even though I will be awarded UC credit.

Wait so if I got a 3 or 4 on the AB exam then I would get 4.0 units for calculus yet if I score a 3 on the BC exam I get credit for calculus as well but that one is 8 units, why is that?

If I got a 4 on the BC exam it says I get credit for 31A / Calculus and 8 units. Is 31A like one semester of calc 2?

Sorry, it's all kinda confusing right now.

to JK:
If I score 3 on cal bc, can I take cal III directly in cc?

Just checked assist and I see that 31A and 31B is calculus 1 and 2, respectively.

I'm still kind of confused by the unit differences though...it says I get credit for 31A / Calculus if I score a 4 on the BC exam but they are both calc 1 and is 8 units worth. A score of 3-4 on the AB exam gives 4 units and a score of 5 gives 4 units for 31A.

adamyyh- It depends on your CC's policy on AP credit. My CC gives 5 units credit for calc 1 and places you into calc 2 if you get a 3 on the BC exam.

Ok getting credit for Calculus, is like the Generic calculus, so if you scored a 3 they just give you generic credit, it is not the exact equivalent to 31 A /B

If you score a 5 on BC- then you get 8 units of actual equivalent UCLA classes credit, for class 31A and 31B

basically a lower score gives you generic credit instead of an exact course equivlanet.

This may impact you come major time if you needed specific preqs for upper div courses. It is one thing to just satisfy the calculus rquirement and another when you need a specific course.

What exactly do you mean by generic credit? Does that mean I'll get credit for the course to fulfill my prereq but I'd need to take it again once I enter UCLA? Or is it credit for the other calculus--calculus for business and social sciences which is only 3 units?

right now i am talking about the credit you would get at UCLA.

Do you see how they list Calculus and then with higher scores they list an ACTUAL course, like 31A/B

You have to realize that when you apply to UCLA they will be the ones that do the equivalency of the AP credit not your CC.

Your CC may let you meet iGETC and be igetc certified by having a 3, that is fine, but when you go to UCLA they will review the AP score, they dont just issue you whatever your CC decided.
So for UCLA to get credit for 31 A/B you need the scores listed, to just meet the requirement that you ahve taken calc (for GE lets say) then the generic "calculus" credit is given, not for an ACTUAL equivalent course.

Yeah, I got that part but what I'm asking is if I'm trying to fulfill a prereq like calc 2 and I get credit for calc 2 from my CC because of my AP credit, does this sufficiently fulfill the prereq regardless of how UCLA sees the equivalence of the AP credit for the course?

i got cal 1&2 credit in cc for my ap cal bc score which is 3. so i cant take the cal 1&2 in cc but ucla woundnt give me those courses credit!
big problem.......

At least you got credit for calc 2 with a 3 haha...did you take AB before BC?

If you are able to skip a class b/c you recieved a 4/5 on the AP test, do you skip the class and get credits, or just skip the class?

For example, as a polisci major, if i recieve a 4/5 on the ap gov exam, i get to skip a prereq. do I still get the 3 credits for this prereq?

Wondering the same thing...

Does anyone know if I get credit for AP Calc BC in my CC would it fulfill the prereq for Haas/Marshall/UCLA as well? This is regardless to the credit these schools give for AP credit on their website.

Also, what is the max units I can have that would put me as a junior once I transfer?

I think you guys are missing what i am trying to say.

It doesnt matter if your CC gives you credit for the preq or not. It will be the UC that will actually evaluate that credit to determine if you meet the preq. or the g.e. requirement.

Your AP credit is not transfered from CC to UC
it is AP---> UC
AP ---> CC

So if your CC gives you credit for having a score of 3, but the UC does not, then you do not get credit.

You can have as many units from CC as you want, you will only get number credit for 105/70 quarter/semester units.

fouxdufafa, yes you will get credit if you scored high enough and the UC allocates x amount of credit for your score.

Thank you for clearing that up. However, I still have a question about the AP credit...If I get the generic credit for calculus by scoring a 3 on the BC exam then will that at the least fulfill the prereq requirement for my major so that I don't have to take it at CC even though I have to take it at UCLA again? I assume that if I get the actual course credit like 31A then I would not need to take it at UCLA once I get there?

I heard that if you have too many units then you are not allowed to transfer as a junior...or is that just for people who are transferring from a 4 year to another UC?

It looks like if I get credit for my AP courses then I will have 76 units (over the limit)...even though I don't get the extra 6 units transferred, I do get credited for all the classes I took, correct? All 76 units are required classes for the schools I am applying to.
