When you go for freshmen orientation is there testing available to place students for calculus classes? For engineering will he get assistance from that department or just a general advisor?

My s does not want to start back at calc 1 if possible. What score does he need on his AP Calc BC this spring to move ahead? I thought I read somewhere about if you scored over a certain number on the sat's you could start higher, is that true? I don't know the class number designations so the info is a little harder to understand.

From that website: Departmental criteria are established each year to determine how credit or placement may be granted to students who take the Advanced Placement tests which are usually given during the student’s senior year in high school. Such course credit may be used toward meeting degree requirements.

Students are notified of Advanced Placement credit by the College Center for Academic Support. Those wishing to discuss Advanced Placement credit should contact that office.

To figure out class number designations, I would recommend looking up the course description of each class to see the topics covered.

141, 142, and 143 are considered “pre-med” calculus courses. They are taught at a slower pace.

161 and 162 go over the same material as 141, 142, and 143, but only in two semesters. This is better for math majors, engineers, physics majors, etc.

DS got a 5 on the AP Calc BC test and started in math 164. He also received the 8 credits for 161 and 162. During orientation in August the math department had a walk in consulting session to talk to the students about placement.
