Greetings. Recently, I spoke with a transfer counselor at a community college I go to. He told me that since I have AP credit via subscore in AP Calc, the equivalent class that I have taken (Math 400, aka Calc I) will not be used for credit and will be seen as a retake. That would've been find had a gotten a C, but I received an A in that class. That means I'm missing out on 20 quality points -- what the hell? I briefly looked at what several of the UC websites say about AP credit and it was stated that the equivalent class may be retaken for full credit.

UC Davis : Advanced Placement

"Mathematics 16A , 17A or 21A may be taken for full credit. Credit for Mathematics 16A, 17A or 21A equivalents may serve as prerequisite for Mathematics 16B, 17B or 21B."

Unless I'm mistaken, if credit is taken from the class and not from the AP score, then the quality points are contributed. Also, Berkeley says:

Advanced Placement Examinations

"Note: Students who duplicate AP credit with course work may have their AP credit deducted from their transcript."

If it is indeed true that transfer students cannot take the equivalent classes and receive credit, why? Another thing is that since my AB subscore is 3 (nothing to be proud of, but my A is a definite improvement), there are universities (mainly private) that will not accept it and thus my GPA would be different to them. Such a disparity makes little sense.

What are your thoughts?
