AP credit transfer

My other daughter (twin) got in to UMd for the fall of 18, and I am having a hard time understanding their AP credit chart. She got a 4 on her AP Language last year, and is taking AP Lit this year. Does she need to take the AP Lit exam? I can’t tell what (if any) of the 4 will give her credit at U Md.

If she is an English major it would count as equivalent to ENG240, but not a gen ed. If she doesn’t need it for her major and doesn’t want to take the exam…up to her. If she takes it, she will still get the college credit (doesn’t apply toward requirements) but will still advance her standing. Class selection order is based on number of credits earned, so she will be 3 extra credits ahead of her peers for class selection.

OK- thank you!

Just a word of caution as you look to transfer AP Credits…additional credits do allow you to advance your standing for future course selection (and housing lotteries I believe ) but if you are in a major with differential tuition such as Engineering and Computer Science, it also means that your tuition will increase sooner as that is based on credits, not years of attendance.

Good point, @terpfam! However, I think there is a limit of how many semesters the differential tuition applies, so it shouldn’t be an issue…?

“Students with 60+ credits (who are not entering freshmen) and enrolled full-time will pay
no more than four (4) semesters of differential tuition fees.
Part-time students will be charged on a per-credit basis but, cumulatively, will not be charged for more than the equivalent of four (4) full-time semesters of undergraduate tuition.”

Thank you @maryversity! I didn’t realize that. You may have just saved us $1400 as we were saving our prepaid tuition plans for junior and senior years due to the differential tuition. We got hit early on the diff tuition due to AP Credits (spring sophomore year) but didn’t use our prepaid plan thinking it would be higher in the next 2 years. Going to make some calls!

@terpfam, haha, now you have some vacation $…!
