AP Credit uses in ECE

So, it appears I am going to end up at Alabama next year.
It wasn’t my top choice, but it was an economically feasible option. Hopefully I can make the most of it.

I had a bit of a question with AP credit.
I understand there is a limit on the number of hours that you can bring in (45 I believe).

I’m having some difficulty deciding which AP classes can cover what, though.
Here is the general flowchart for my majors:

http://ece.eng.ua.edu/files/2011/07/CEO_Flowchart_Double_Major_with_Math_2004.pdf

I have gotten fives on AP Gov, APUSH, AP Chem, and AP Stats.
This year I am taking both AP Physics C exams, APES, AP Lit, AP Calc BC, and the two AP Macro and Micro exams.
I was also considering taking the CLEP for Spanish language.

I get that the AP Chem would match up and Calc BC would match with Calc 1 and 2, but I can’t tell what would count as an HI & SB elective or an H & L & FA elective.

Basically, I was hoping someone could advise me as to which courses I could knock off assuming I pass my upcoming AP tests.

Thanks.

APush (US History) with a score of 4 or 5 transferred as Hy 203 and 204 (American Civilizations)
You can get a lot if you get high scores in both AP Eng and AP Lit. (Not sure of exact requirement probably 4 or 5) transferred as Eng 101 and 102 …and Eng 208 and 210.

[Credit by Examination < The University of Alabama](http://courseleaf.ua.edu/introduction/academicpolicies/creditbyexamination/)

APUSH will give you 6 credits towards the HI/SB requirement. AP Gov will give you 3.

Assuming a decent score on CLEP, that should satisfy the HU/FL requirement.

So all HI/SB and HU/FL is covered.

CHEM is good for CH101.

You will need to decide for yourself to take credit or repeat Calc and Physics.

Oops I may have missed that one …a high score in both AP Eng and AP Eng Lit earns a Humanities.
Not Eng 208 and 210.

^ A few more questions. Sorry.

Do engineering majors tend to repeat Calc/ Physics?

Will the unrelated tests (APES, Macro, and Micro) do anything for me, or would it be safe to cancel for a partial refund?

dser89,

Welcome! I do hope your enthusiasm increases as that will help you to ‘make the most of it’. I anticipate you will be pleasantly surprised!

Regarding APs, there is no longer a 45 credit limit. You cannot have more than 50% of your credits from a non-4 year school though. Check out the updated info here:

[Credit by Examination < The University of Alabama](http://courseleaf.ua.edu/introduction/academicpolicies/creditbyexamination/)

This link should be able to answer your questions about course credit. Also, taking the CLEP for language is a good idea.

Welcome and Roll Tide!

dser89, repeating or not is a subject of debate. Dean Karr (head of engineering) recommends you retake. Some parents will argue otherwise. Personally, I say start off in Calc II and Physics 105 but that is just my opinion.

As far as those other tests go, if you are in the classes now I would take the tests. You may change your mind about your major. It would be a shame to have to take something in college because you cancelled a test. You will receive credits on your transcript for those APs but they will just give you general credit.

Welcome!

You can now bring in more than 45 credits. How many do you have?

I would skip Cal I. It’s your decision about Physics. did you have a strong Physics teacher?

Both of my kids skipped Cal I. Cal II doesn’t build on Cal II, so you might want to repeat that.

Using a good number of AP credits can be a nice benefit as an eng’g major. It means that you can take lighter loads and/or take some fun classes just for interest. Eng’g majors often don’t have that option.

Have you visited Bama? I do hope that you arrive with a positive attitude. I think you’ll like it if you do.

Get the football tix frosh pkg (even if you don’t care about football), sign up for either Alabama Action or Outdoor Action (you’re in the Honors College, right?), and dive in.

AA or OA are a great opportunity to immediately make friends with other students in the honors college.

There is a limit to credit by exam - my recruiter told me so. I thought she said the limit was now 65, but not sure if that is 100% correct.

Aeromom, the limit is that a “minimum of 50% of the coursework required to earn a bachelor’s degree at The University of Alabama must be earned at a bachelor’s degree granting institution (four-year college or university)” which will mean something in the 60+ range. Dual credits from a community college would affect the limit as well.

Cal II doesn’t build on Cal II

Ugh…meant to type…Cal II doesn’t build on Cal I. lol

dser89: Are you an EE major? You are looking at an EE chart from 2004. Use this one:

http://ece.eng.ua.edu/files/2012/02/EE_Flowchart_Spring_2012.pdf

^^

Is that the one with the ECE track within EE? Is there a different flowchart for ECE?

Edited to add…this is the ECE track option flowchart…

http://ece.eng.ua.edu/files/2012/02/CEO_Flowchart_Spring_2012.pdf

AP Micro and AP Macro count as SB credits and are required by all Business majors so I would go ahead and sit for those exams…one never knows if they may end up changing majors or you may decide to get an MBA at some point…you could cancel the APES exam as you already have AP science credits…

If you are not already aware of these programs you may want to look into them…University Scholars and the STEM MBA program.

I think you will be happy at Alabama if you allow yourself to be…Welcome and Roll Tide!

I do think that since this student had his heart set on another school (Notre Dame?), that attending another school, any school, because of money can be a let down, but that let down can be mitigated IF the student takes steps to immediately get involved. That can mean buying football tix (even if Bama beat the luck out of the Irish in Jan. ), signing up for Outdoor Action or Indoor Action (don’t sign up for OA unless you don’t mind the heat), and participating in WOW week activities.

Has the OP come back to this thread? If not, I send a PM to him.

Thank you all for the replies.
According to the link, my maximum AP/CLEP credit would be 66 hours. So if I drop the APES, I should be safely under the 65 hour-mark.

Thank you for the updated flowcharts. Is there anywhere I could find the current math + ECE double major option? It seems as if the current engineering website might not have updated.

I have visited campus, and it is nice. Mom2collegekids is correct though. Notre Dame was bittersweet to get into (dream school, but far to expensive and non-existent financial aid).

I’ll look into the University Scholars. I was planning on getting an MBA following undergrad work. I’ve gotten a few GMAT and GRE books to prepare and was considering taking a GMAT at the end of my freshman year (similar to what I did for the ACT in high school).

I’m not big into sports, so I don’t think I’ll get the football tickets. I was still planning on getting involved, though. I enjoy dance, Science Olympiad, Investment Club, and Class Council, and was probably going to join some similar clubs when I come to Alabama.

Thanks again for the guidance.
