Hey everyone...So I just committed to Pomona today! I am so excited! But I was wondering what do do about my 6 AP tests that I am signed up for this year. I know Pomona only accepts credit for 2 of them and I've already taken and passed four.....Is it a good idea to take all 6 or should I cancel them and save the money? My only concern has to do with whether or not Pomona uses the AP scores for class placement.

I think that you just take tests when we get there for placement. I was reading the schedule for the first week or so (it might have been from last year, I forget) and I saw a day where they had a bunch of placement examinations. However, I wouldn’t cancel all your AP tests since your commitment to taking them was probably part of the reason for admission, kind of like staying in all of your classes.

Thanks! Yea…I’m definitely not canceling all of them…like AP Chem and AP Psych I feel like would be useful for a neuroscience major :)…but at the same time some of my other ones I feel I could save money on instead…

Pomona will only accept credit for 2. APs are rarely used for placement purposes…I think only the Econ and psych departments accept AP results for placement. (Chemistry does not).

I am a current Pomona freshman and only took the test in three of my four senior classes. I doubt the administration checks, and they certainly didn’t care. Unless there is some new part of the application where you specifically state which AP tests you will be taking, there is no cause for worry. You can get “credit” for two classes but this just reduces the total number of classes required to graduate from 32 to 30. Lots of people wish they had the time to take a lot more than 32, so this isn’t terribly useful. You don’t actually get credit for specific Pomona courses. Last year, this fact annoyed me. Once you’re here, you’ll find that pre-reqs aren’t a big deal and you can generally get into any class where the professor believes you have the necessary background knowledge and are capable of the work. You can completely ignore the results of the math placement test - they are for advisory purposes only and are not even recorded.

Hey, another current Pomona freshman here. My roommate has been in chem all this year and said the AP Chem test won’t do anything; you take placement tests here anyway. He also is in Psych and Cog Sci and said the Psych test WILL pass you out of the intro course. Other than that, the only other AP tests that really do anything that I know of are Macro and Micro (if you get a 4 or 5 on BOTH tests, you can pass through EITHER Macro Principles OR Micro Principles), and a language AP (if you get a 4 or 5, or a 650+ on the SATII, you pass out of the language requirement. But be wary, because I learned from an upperclassman who got screwed that even if you pass out of the language req, you still have to take at least one language course if you want to study abroad in a non-English program). And just for clarity, although this is probably a non-issue, the two “abstract credits” you can receive from AP tests require a 4 or 5 on those tests.

My recommendation, take AP Psych so you can skip intro to psych, don’t take AP Chem because you’re going to be taking a placement test here anyway, and if the Macro/Micro or foreign language tests apply to you, take those too. Other than that, sit back, relax and laugh at your friends loaded with AP studying while you ponder your upcoming SoCal excursions :)
