I have searched on CC and the UCD website and I am still unsure how AP credit is awarded. I was admitted into CAES with the Ecological Management and Restoration major. From what I have gathered I can use ap credit for unrestricted electives. How does that work? But Based on the general catalog it seems like I will get no credit. I have gotten a 5 on APUSH and 4s on AP Bio, AP English Language & Composition, and AP Calculus AB and will be taking more exams in May. Can someone help sort this out for me?

Fairly straightforward. AP Credit counts as units. The ONLY classes you are going to be able to skip that matter, though, are the first 2 math classes (if your majors goes through the 21 series) and the first chemistry class. Other classes, like economics, history, etc. CAN be skipped or retaken for credit. For instance, I got a 5 on US history but I’m taking it this quarter just to have an easy GE that I can boost my gpa with.

So basically, you can skip math 21A with your AB score. You can also get credit for history 17A/17B with your APUSH score, but you CAN retake it if you want. Bio won’t do much except give you credits. AP English will get you out of a composition class, but if you plan on going to grad school you need to take one anyway.

That doesn’t mean all your credits are useless, though. The more credits you have, the earlier you can pick classes before your peers. For example, I passed 11 AP tests, so I got to pick classes a full 2 days before my roommates allowing me to get into a chemistry class that fills up fast. My roommate had to wait until next quarter to get the class.

As a recap, you will get credits for your tests. It really does help.
