AP credit

I'm going into music industry at college next year and would like to know if I should take the AP exams (Calc, Econ, Literature) in May or not because I don't think it's going to really benefit or exempt from any classes since I'm not majoring in business, english, or anything. What do you suggest?

The one thing you might do is check to see what required basic courses are necessary to graduate. It is possible that US Govt., for example, is required and if you took the AP you could skip having to take that in college. Same for Freshman English. Every school is different, so you would certainly want to contact the advisor for your major and ask about AP credits. Both of my daughters were able to enter as Freshmen with more than half their credits already satisfied because of AP courses. But they both attended LAC's -- they weren't music majors. My son is going to be entering a Bachelor of Music in Performance program and we are wondering the same thing as you are. I think the AP Govt. is the only AP test he'll take. Sorry to not be much help. Contact the school you plan on attending - that's the best route.

While in virtually any BM program, it's impossible to graduate early because 8 semesters of lessons and ensemble are required, having AP credits can get you out of distribution requirements or electives, or can facilitate doing a second degree. If your future school accepts a lot of AP credits, it's probably worth your time and money to take the tests.

Violinmom - glad to know there's someone else in the same boat. It's because I only know of the AP Music Theory that exempts the theory requirements (although not offered at my school) and if you've played piano for a long time, you'll be exempted from the keybord requirements. I'm not double majoring either so those other exams won't matter. (My real concern is whether I should take the Econ/Lit exams) I'm going to ask my guidance counselor for advice and in most likelyhood will not stress myself over taking excess AP exams.

fiddlefrog- i'm not really planning on graduating early. but if i do, i can always fulfill whatever requirements in the summer if i really want to.
