I am applying to a majority of the UCs, a few cal states and some out of state state schools. My question is: I took and passed AP Lang with a 4 and I am currently in AP Lit. Will any of the above colleges give me credit for both English classes if I pass both tests, or do they only accept one AP test as credit for english?
For the UC’s:
English
Language and Composition (UC-E): 8
Literature and Composition (UC-E/H): 8
(8-unit maximum for both exams)
For the CSU’s, you need to check each schools website to see if you will get credit for both. It varies by campus.
Here is SLO’s link: http://content-calpoly-edu.s3.amazonaws.com/registrar/1/Degree_Progress/articdoc/APCRED2016.pdf
Here is SDSU’s link:

For the OOS schools, again you need to check each schools website for their AP policy.
so 8 units max for both exams means combined you can only get 8? so if i got a 4 on lang, i have 8 credits and cannot get anymore?
Correct.
However, some schools may give different subject credit for AP English literature versus AP English language, or for a score of 5 versus a score of 4, even if you get no additional credit units.
For example, the UCB College of Letters and Science allows a score of 4 on either AP English exam to fulfill the first half of its reading and composition requirement, but allows a score of 5 on AP English literature to fulfill both halves.

Note that the 8 units you get at UC from a 3 or higher on an AP English exam are quarter units. For semester system schools UCB and UCM, this converts to 5.3 semester units.
So if you go to UCB College of Letters and Science with a 4 on AP English language, you get:
5.3 semester units and exemption from first half of reading and composition requirement
If you score any score other than 5 on AP English literature (or do not take it), this does not change. However, if you score a 5 on AP English literature, you get:
5.3 semester units and exemption from both halves of reading and composition requirement
Check each school for its own policies on subject credit for AP exams. Note that different divisions within a school may have different policies. Here is a summary for UCs at the division level (some subject credit for specific majors may not necessarily be listed here):
