AP credit

I don't understand the difference between using an ap credit period since Duke only accepts 2 ap credits and just using ap credits for advancement. Are they the same thing?

No, technically they aren't. Duke uses 2 for credit, as in only 2 of your tests can be counted towards the 32 credits needed for graduation requirements. Other ap tests, however, can be used to placement. For instance, say you got 5s on BC Calc, Spanish Language, and Chemistry. You will only get 2 cc's towards graduation, but you can place out of all 3 of those designated classes. I hope that makes sense.

This, however, only applies to Trinity. I believe Pratt has a different policy.

ooooooh. Awesome. Thanks now i got it.

Pratt lets you use only two to cover any of the five Trinity distribution requirements, but the rest can be used to cover courses outside those requirements (for example, math, chem, bio, and physics) OR for general electives. There is no explicit limit, though there are only so many spots that can be filled.
