how is ap credit awarded?
is there a max number of credits you can get?
how many credits are needed to complete one semester? (is this possible with ap credits?)

I'm pretty sure it's awarded automatically once you send your scores to U of I
Specific info here:
U of I Admissions: Summary of Advanced Placement (AP) Credit Opportunities for Fall 2007 Incoming Students

I don't think there's a max, but you could always call your counselor or the admissions office for specific information.

there's definitely not a max; it's actually pretty crazy how much credit some people rack up. My advisor during summer registration when I was a pre frosh told me he had another kid who was basically going to get junior standing out of his AP credit (obviously this is not even close to typical, but it sure was nice how much I got).

you don't have to do anything extra besides making sure the collegeboard sens your AP scores to UIUC, they'll take care of it from there. (but do make sure you tell your advisor during summer registration your expected scores so you don't sign up for classes that you're probably getting credit for.)

There's no maximum number of AP credits. Every semester is 15 hours, so you would need 30 hours to enter as a sophomore.

someone had advised me not to try and skip any classes, i don't if this is accurate? in that, for example, calculus AB, even if I got a 4/5 they said you shouldn't skip Math 220 because a college class is much different than an AP class in high school, and I should take Math 220 anyway just to really properly understand the college class

You should make that judgment based on your honest assessment of the difficulty of your high school course and your mathematical ability, but you should keep in mind that universities set their AP grade cutoff at a certain level (in UIUC's case a 4) because students scoring that high tend to do well in the next course.
