Does anyone know how AP credit works with the first year of studies program? For example, if I were to test out of a calculus course, would I then test out of the math requirement? Thanks a lot.

you guys are gonna be ****ed, but my adviser just told me that many of the departments are changing their ap standards (increasing them). Whereas, before you could get a 4 on AP euro and AP US to get (i think) 6 hours, now you will need a 5 and only get 3 (at least that's what he thought). AP credits are completely up to each individual department and it varies from year to year. You can check online and look at the chart, but I don't know if they will have posted the revised one yet.

actually that was wrong, it doesn't vary from year to year, it usually stays pretty constant and every once in awhile a department will change something (last year chemistry department changed and i only got 4 instead of the normal 8 that everyone would get for a 5 before last year).

Credit by Exam

i understand that much, but my question regarded the first year of studies program. could i, in theory, test out of a math or science requirement, or would i just test out of a lower level class, then having the option to take a higher level class?

Have you checked the FYS homepage? It has a lot of answers for questions like yours, I believe.

People who get good AP Lit scores test out of the First Year Comp. Not sure about other subjects.

How will AP credit affect my schedule?

You will be asked to list on a course selection form (received in a June mailing) the courses for which you have (or hope to have) AP credit. Your academic advisor will take into consideration your course credit when building your schedule for fall semester. You will not be required to repeat courses for which you have credit and, in many cases, the advisor will contact you regarding this over the summer. However, all first-year students are expected to register for five courses in addition to Physical Education or ROTC, regardless of AP credit. All AP credit awarded by the dean of the First Year of Studies is entered on the student’s transcript; this credit may be applied toward required or elective courses in so far as the student’s particular college program will permit.

I think that means yes to my question, but I'm still not entirely sure.

My freshman year, you could test out of both Calc requirements if you had taken Calc BC and gotten, I believe, a 4. I got a 5 on the Calc AB and tested out of first semester, and had a remaining semester of math to take, although that does not necessarily have to be Calc - it can be logic, stats, etc.

To confirm TheKid and KevDude's responses, my DD tested out of FY Comp and her Math requirement using AP. She will get her degree without taking any Math course at ND.

I tested out of a Chem course, but I still registered for it since the AP results weren't back yet. I met with my advisor and fixed my schedule when I got to campus. It really messed up my schedule, but what can you do...

you can test out of any requirements. you get the credit for the course that it lists on the AP chart. I won't have to take any history, math, science (I'm a business major though ;))

Fanucci prepared you well eh?

No, moreso Jacobs in senior year. I bet his AP Chem class was harder than the chem class at ND.

But she helped too lol.

hahah Fanucci/Denicola's chem class was the last I've taken, what was that, 3, 4 years ago? I think I need a refresher..
