AP Credits and Freshman Writing Seminar

I got a 5 on the AP English Language Test, but I still want to take Freshman Writing Seminars because they look like a lot of fun and seem like a great way to meet people because the classes are so small and interactive.

If I don't use my AP credits to exempt me from the Freshman Writing Seminar, will I still be able to use them as elective credits?

I'm wondering because it's time to sign up for AP tests and this will effect whether or not I decide to take the AP English Literature test.

Thank You (I'll be in CAS btw)!

CAS students who have a 5 on either of the English AP tests place out of one freshman writing seminar.

But it is not at all clear from the Knight Institute Web page http://www.arts.cornell.edu/knight_institute/fws/credit.htm whether students who get 5s on BOTH English tests place out of BOTH freshman writing seminars. It's possible that CAS may want everybody to take at least one seminar.

You might want to e-mail the advising office at CAS and ask them to clarify the policy. If you explain that your decision about whether or not to take (and pay for) the AP English Literature test depends on the answer to your question, they should understand why you are asking.

If you are in CAS, you will NOT be allowed to place out of both writing seminars, even if you have 5's on both English AP tests. You essentially forfeit your AP credit on the second English AP test. I suspect that if you choose not to place out of any writing seminars, you won't get credit for any of your English AP tests at all.

Thanks a lot Marian and norcalguy!...i'll email CAS to verify whether or not my 'unused' AP Credits can be used as elective credits just in case

Do you guys recommend two Freshman Writing Seminars, or should I place out of one of them because I can?

I used my English Language AP credit to place out of one seminar. I've found writing seminars to be interesting but generally useless in terms of teaching good writing skills. Despite the fact that I have taken upper level English courses at Cornell, I have not received credit for the 5 I received on my English Literature AP test which is why I believe the only way to receive credit for your English AP tests is to place out of a seminar.

good to know, norcalguy! wont be wasting my time and money on the test then!

Writing seminar is a waste of time and a big gamble. You could end up in a really crappy one with hard assignments and an awful teacher.

Do any ILR students know how the AP English credits are handled in ILR? If I got a 5 on the AP Language, is there any point in taking the AP Literature test?

In ILR, you can get credit for one writing seminar, while the other AP english would count towards your GECs (General Elective Credits).

here's the list of AP credits for ILR
http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/admissions/Apply/upload/AP%20Placement.doc

I'm Applying to CoE and am taking AP English Language. Will I have to take any english classes? I hate english, so if I can get out of it, that would be sweet.

tun, how useful are GEC's? If I would already have at least 3, should I pursue getting more from APs?

You're gonna need GEC's to fill out the rest of your 120 credit requirement, of which include ILR requirements, distribution requirements, and writing seminar + physical education.

Take a look at this for an idea of what kind of courses an ILR student has to take.

Ungst, no matter what, you need to take at least 1 writing seminar. It doesn't have to be in the English department but it should still involve quite a bit of writing. If you don't get a 5 on the AP, you'll need to take 2 writing seminars.

Do you need a 5 to get out of one writing seminar, or will a 4 do it too? Thanks. (for Hotel school, or any school) thanks!!!
