AP Credits Question

How do AP Credits work in Stony Brook?
For example, if a student took Art History and received a score of 3, this student would have an "SBU equivalent" of none. However, they would receive 3 credits.
If another student took Art History and received a score of 4/5, this student would have an "SBU equivalent" of ARH 101,102. He/she would also receive 6 credits.

So, how does this work? Does the person with the 3 get credits without being exempt from class? What are these credits for if they haven't taken the class? Also, what about the one who received a 4/5?

Lastly, if we are exempt from a class, how is this reflected on our transcript with respect to the AP score?

I received my information from this link:

Thank you very much!

Good question. In your example:

A 3 would earn three elective credits, but would not receive specific class credit. This would only really affect you if you were in a major/minor that required that specific class; if you’re an Art History major, for example, you’d still need to take ARH 101 and 102. If not, then you’ve got three elective credits that will count toward your overall graduation requirement.

A 4 or 5 gives you credit for those classes AND the credits. So for example, if you’re looking to minor in Art History, then you’ve already knocked out two of the seven required courses.

Either way, the courses are reflected as “T” on your transcript (for “transfer credit”) and are not factored into your GPA.

Hope this makes sense – let me know if you have more questions and I’ll clarify.
