Ap Credits!!!!

I'm considering the law career also. Did your D take pre-law in her undergraduate years? Is that even required for a lawyer-aspiring students? Or can one just take any major but take LSAT later?

there is no designated pre-law track. pick any major and take the LSAT. the only suggestion is to major in something that requires critical thinking etc.

So would BBA major and economics or international relations minor get me ready for law career? thanks

well..i want to be under the new GER...b/c its more flexible....

D has not started school yet. She's a graduating HS Senior now, will be heading to Israel in late August, and will be starting Emory in the fall of 2009.

The other posts were correct in that there is not a prescibed course of study in undergrad for law. However, the English, Economics, Govt./Political Science are probably all good courses to take. But again, a solid liberal arts curriculum is just fine. My D wants to do environmental law so she will probably be taking her share of Environ courses.

/w Leibow11 Sorry for the midunderstanding.

Technically though if one has like 4 AP classes with AP scores of 4, isn't it better to go with old GER instead? Even though the new GER offers more flexible, as long as you know what specific classes to take, it doesn't really matter does it?

I just sent an email to the admissions office asking for clarification on the AP issue. Let's see what they say and I'll post it. As far as GER and AP credit......... who knows. If you want a true liberal arts education then the old GER isn't that bad I guess. Lot's of courses and flexibility to fulfill in my opinion. And if you're not planning to get out in 3 years like my D then the AP issue is not as big a deal.

Can american univeristies rescind ur admission if u score less than ur predicted grades in IB ... coz I got predicted a 41 and I know that Im not getting more than a 37-38 so....

Here are the facts directly from Emory admissions: Scores of 4 & 5 are still counted towards graduation credit. Although there was talk of not giving credit for 4's that idea was shot down.

/w Leibow11
wow thanks! i still have econ exams left and that's really brigthen up my day :)

will 4's be accepted if I want to be under the new GER??

4s will be accepted for this fall, but not next fall (fall of 09).

dgebll, where did you hear that 4s will not be accepted in 09? No mention of that was conveyed to me by admissions during my conversation with them today. And I was asking in reference to my D who deferred matriculation until 09.

well i guess then 4 will be accepted even those entering emory in fall of 2009, as what Leibow11 says

Well..this is what I heard. There are two routes, new GER or old GER....if you want to go to the new route...and AP Credits must be 5's but with a more flexible route......if you old the old route AP Credits must be 4 or 5's but more requirement.....

Class of 2009 will all be under the new GER so only 5's will be accepted....
They let the 2008 students choose b/c they have decided on the new GER AFTER they have students committed to them. They think that it is not fair...therefore, they let the students choose.

ahhhhhh. Where did you "hear" what you described above. In an email from the admissions office I asked "Are AP scores of 4 and 5 still counting for graduation credit under the new GER plan?" and the answer was YES. If you have factual information then I'd love to know where it came from. If not, then let's not pass on hearsay on this discussion board. All that does is perpetuate misinformation and rumor. Thank you.

Well the only "evidence" that one had was the old article a while ago, before it was even finalized, and since Leibow11 asked yesterday/today and got the answer, i think Leibow11 is more solid.

oh...I was referring to the article...sorry :)

I saw this info in the article and from the email that one of the deans sent to all the current students with this information. Some were worried that our AP 4s wouldn't count if we were graduating in the spring of 09.
I don't have it anymore, but that's what it said. The Office of UG Education is the one to get the best info from. I would email them. I haven't heard anything about 4s being accepted after this fall, but I do know that the OUGE is working out all the specifics (as stated in the email).

We should all understand the ramifications of this type of change. It affects everyone that have been accepted and those that are already students at Emory. To lessen or reduce requirements is seldom a problem. To make them more restrictive is often a problem. If a student decides to attend a school based on particular criteria, the backlash if those requirements (AP Credit) are changed are enormous. Obviously, a school can change graduation requirements effective on a certain date in the future as long as plenty of notice is given and an applicant is informed of those changes before they commit to attend. There is no guarantee that Emory won't change the AP policy for NEW students, effective in 09. But if a student, like my D, attends Emory based on the current policy and plans to complete her degree in 3 years (with 32 credits worth of AP courses) then any change affecting her would be unrealistic.

Anyway, dgebll, the bottom line is the information I've now received from 2 admissions counselors is that 4's and 5's are still counted, even for those that defer admission like my D. Very few top tier schools (IVY's, top 10 LAC's) allow the amount AP credit that Emory allows. And I do believe that in time, as the selectivity of Emory increases even more, they may reduce the AP credit given for graduation and only allow flexibility for course placement. Most students attend top schools with a significant number of AP scores in the 4 & 5 range.

I think we're wearing out this thread :) Let's not let rumor, hearsay, or inactive plans cloud the facts. Until we read it on the website that the AP policy has officially changed we're just upsetting everyone for no reason.
