Could someone explain to S and me how AP credits work at AU?

.
At orientation, he was told he placed out of the university writing requirement because he got a 4 on AP Lang but he forgot to ask if he receives any credits. He has the same question with respect to the 4 he just received on AP Stats. He is in Kogod and Stats is a required course–does he just not need to fulfill the requirement or does he receive a certain number of credits?

And will he receive any additional credits for his 4s in AP Lit in addition to the 4 in AP Language?

He thinks he is receiving 6 credits for AP IS history and thinks that he also has fulfilled one of the gen ed areas?

If you search for AP on American’s website it gives a nice chart of what you receive for AP tests. My S also does not have to take college writing.

Hi newparent,
Thank you for your response. Isn’t it nice to place out of such a heavy-workload course?

My son and I looked at the articulation list but didn’t see any listing for AP Stats or AP language as far as credits go, even though he places out of those requirements, which is why he is wondering how many credits he is receiving, or if he just doesn’t need to take those certain classes. He is trying to figure out if he is starting with 12 or 21 hours, either of which would be wonderful. The articulation list specifies that he has completed Gen Ed area 2 with his AP US history, and it shows 6 credits for AP Lit as well, but does not contain a statement that a gen ed area is considered completed.

He said he is going to email his advisor his scores and questions this weekend, he’s just being impatient. It doesn’t make any difference for him this semester at any rate because the first semester for Kogod students is fairly cut and dried–he is taking a different gen ed instead of writing but that is the only difference his APs make.

AP classes are worth the number of credits that the class they replace is also worth. Typically this means 3 credits for most classes with lab sciences and some math classes earning 4 credits per exam.
