AP Credits

What's up fellow CC'ers?! I just did the math, and, provided I score what I think I will on my AP tests this year, I should be eligible for 30 credits from AP testing! I was wondering if UIUC places a cap on the number of hours one can use. I technically could get 40 hours with my physics credit, but I've decided against skipping introductory engineering physics.

Thanks,
Vinay

Oh, and, in case you guys were wondering, I’m thinking of using credit for the following tests:

AP Chem (5)
AP Lit (4 or 5)
AP Calc BC (5)
AP Comp Sci (5)
AP Macroeconomics (5)
AP Microeconomics (5)

I’m pretty confident I can skip any intro courses in these subjects. Otherwise I wouldn’t be willing to use the credit.

I don’t think the issue really is whether UIUC will accept the credit, or not. What they’ll accept is pretty clear based on their AP credit page. Where it gets more involved is credit towards the fulfillment of the graduation requirements of your program of study. For the College of Engineering, for example, 18 hours of General Education credits are required (6 humanities, 6 social science, and 6 free electives). While you might get “credit” for your AP, whether that credit gets you any closer to fulfilling the requirements of your degree is the real issue. There are several requirements “boxes” that you have to check off with one or more courses taken during your academic career at UIUC. While you can take, and get credit for, as many courses as you want, if they don’t get you any closer to being able to graduate with a degree, then they’re potentially a very expensive way to spend your time. That’s why your advisor, who hopefully knows this stuff, is critical to helping you plan your schedule of classes from term to term.
