Okay, so this is my 1st year taking an AP and I just noticed that it says suggested writing time 45 minutes for the dbq...it is impossible for me to write one in 45 minutes. Is it really just suggested or do you have only 45 minmutes to complete it?

Take 45 Minutes. You can get 4 pages down in that time, I assure you.

well i just went to do a practice one and i went as fas ti could and it took me 12 minutes to read the documents and plan my essay, 15 for the intro, and 13 for the first paragraph...at that rate ill never do it in 45 mintues. I just want to know is it like the SAT where you really are only allowed that time or can u take more than that

They give you 15minutes in the beginning [not counting the 45minutes] to read the documents. You're not allowed to write any part of your essay in those 15minutes.

You are allowed 15 minutes of reading time, and then 1 hour 55 minutes to write your DBQ and 2 FR Essays. You can budget your time however you like, which is what you were asking. However, you should probably do it in 45 min or less, because that doesn't leave too much time for essays.

you have a 15 minute reading time before you even start the 45 minute writing time...

Pentasa is right.

My teacher told us that they collect your paper after each essay...is that true? I don't think I'd be able to budget my time well enough

No, they do not do that. They give you a block of time for the DBQ and the 2 FR essays (45min + 2 x 35min = 105 minutes, if I'm not mistaken), plus the 15 minute reading/planning period at which time you cannot start writing your essays, but you can make notes on the documents and a general outline for your DBQ. After the first 45 minutes are up, you do not have to proceed to the FR questions -- it is only a suggestion. However, don't spend too much time on the DBQ, and don't feel like you need to use every document if it's going to mean not completing your other FR questions.

if im not mistaken, in the AP Euro test last year we had to stop the DBQ after the 45 min of writing. Do I remember incorrectly?

Yeah, I'm sorry to say that you do... :p

They just suggest that you move on after 45 minutes, but it's all part of the same packet (questions and written responses), so it's not broken up.

Yeah - this year I used up more like an hour on the DBQ and wrote my comparative for WH in 20 minutes.
