AP Diversity

That’s sad.

Although my high school has a close to 50% minority population, I’m usually the only minority in my classes. Out of the seven AP classes I’ve taken this year, i’ve been the only minority in four of them, and in the other three classes, there are only a few minority students. There’s also a lack of gender diversity in some classes at my school - one of the AP English Lang & Comp. classes in my school is all female.

I went to a school that was half black and half white. We didn’t have APs though…lol. I guess I can’t really add much to this except that you guys really don’t know many black people do you?

…I counted how many black people I saw in my classes each day once in junior year, not including myself or repeats. I think there were about 8, but at least 3 of them, I guess, were less a part of the African-American culture, one being Ethiopian, another Ghanaian, and the last biracial and raised by his Cambodian mother. But AP English was always the most diverse of my real* AP classes.
Outside of AP classes, I think there might be no black people in Chamber orchestra next year. The aforementioned Ghanaian girl and I, both violists, were the only ones, after a talented male violinist left for an arts high school. He would have graduated this year anyway. So, I suppose there will be about 50 white students and four Asians.
Our school is divided up into tracks early, and the students in the highest track rarely meet those in the lower. As I discovered, bot unexpectedly, at graduation and the few other recent events where all of our senior class was together, most of the faces and names I don’t recognize were those of black students. Le sigh.

*AP World History is not a real AP class around here as far as I’m concerned :(. smh…

There’s one Asian and one black kid in my APUSH class, and a pretty high percentage of Asians in all the math and science APs at my school (probably 50-60%), and one Indian in my AP Chem class.

I know a lot of black people, they’re just not in advanced courses at my school. I know one that’s taking IB Courses.

Well, as sad as it sounds, our entire school has around 5 African Americans and 2 Native Americans.
Dont get me started with the AP classes…
