AP: Do you have to sign up for AP before summer??

I just moved from one state to another (FL to TN). While I was in FL, I completed my prerequisites to take AP but I was talking to a girl who lives in another county in Tennessee, and she said that she had a summer reading list for her AP Lit class that had to be turned in before school started and that it counted as a grade. Juniors register (get schedules) where I live on August 1st, but my dad is calling the school tomorrow to see if I need to talk to the councilor. I was just wondering from anyone who takes AP if they had to sign up at the beginning of summer or if they were able to sign up a little before school started. This school doesn't have very many AP students.

I wanted to take AP Lit, AP US history, and AP Bio. (Not sure I will take them all this year)

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

My school usually has people sign up before summer. However, it is possible to get into the class if you’re willing to do the summer assignment after the summer.

We send in our course requests in March and find out our schedule in about 3 weeks (2 weeks before schools starts) . I just signed up last minute for AP Lit and was suprised there was no work assigned for the summer. You should be able to get the classes you want. Just make sure to check for summer assignments with all your classes. Your teachers will probably understand if you need an extension.

That’s usually how it is so that the school knows how many people will take the class.
