I'm currently junior and recently got accpeted into the 2010 EP/EA Program. I'm planning on taking Arguements and Logical Analysis and Differential and Interal Calculus. I'm not sure if these classes are right for me, any suggestions? I'm currently taking AP Calc AB and AP Language and Compsition and have straight A's in both. Any feedback on how the classes are, profs I should look for, how much homework there is, etc. would be greatly appriciated!

This completely depends on what you are interested in! Arguments and Logical Analysis really sounds like our “Interpretation and Argument” class, required by all freshmen. I would suggest taking heavy math courses/science courses/engineering/programming courses, as they will indeed make for a rough summer, but then you will be EXTREMELY prepared for college/APs. Note a 5 on AP English Lit counts for a free elective here (does NOT replace Interp). Also, getting a 5 on AP English Lit and AP English Language still only counts for ONE elective, not two…

Just take the courses that sound the most interesting to you, and do NOT be scared if you think they’ll be too hard—there’ll be people to help you every step of the way.

This is an 80 section course, which means it’s in the same section as the ‘Logic and Proofs’ course. Don’t be bedazzled by the ‘we break apart arguments’ description-- it’s definitely not Interp and Argument and it is not an English course or writing course. It’s a very rigorous logic course that will have you doing problems like logic gates, truth tables, diagrams and so on. It’s also very abstract. If this is what you are looking for, then this is the class you should take.

when did u send ur app in?

thanks for all your help! is there any english/rhetoric based class that you would recommend?
shadesofgrey- i sent my app in at the end of march.

Anything with 76- is an English/Rhetoric course. I would recommend taking Interpretation and Argument or the Media Studies class. If you’re looking for a challenge, Media Studies would be better since it’s 200 level instead of Interp, which is more of a basic ‘writing for down syndrome patients’ class during the year - but during AP/EA it’s likely to be more intensive and probably more focal.

If you have an interest in history, I would also advise taking the Russian History course. Since it’s Russian History, it’s likely that Dr. Katz teaches it, and he’s supposedly one of the stars of the history department. :)

Also Intro to Ethics would probably be a good rhetorical course. I have not taken it, but I know it is popular with the EHPP majors.

Call the Professor who is the summer advisor-- (I forgot his name for the moment)…he is exceedingly helpful and knowledgeable about all the courses and will help you decide what fits your short and long term interests.

Professor Alba I think??

He is also the head of the HSS Scholars Program
