My school system offers regular and AP economics (Macro and Micro) over the summer. I am considering taking one of these this summer, which would be sophomore to junior year for me, to fulfill the graduation requirement but I'm not sure which one. My summer is fairly busy, but during the regular school year I have a 4.2 weighted GPA, so I am up to a challenge. What do you think the courses and work would be like over a summer-long class for each? Should I take AP or regular to aid me in college entrance in the future?

What do you plan on majoring?

Something business related, hopefully at UVA. Not entirely sure yet though.

AP will look better as it’s more rigorous. I am in AP Econ (macro/micro) right now and it’s definitely the easiest AP I’ve taken, so it shouldn’t be too difficult for you to do over the summer. But, given that it is a summer class, how do you think you will do on the exam after having a significant break from the material apart from studying?

Thanks for bringing that up @etacarinae, I’m going to take that into consideration now.

AP Micro was not terribly taxing for my kids relative to other APs. If it impacts your decision, UVA only accepts a 5 for credit, though the professor for Micro is so great (Elzinga) that getting the credit may be a mixed blessing.

Considering you plan on majoring in business, I think you should take it. It’s a college-level class so it will give you an idea if you really do want to study something like this at university. I am a sophomore as well, however, I’m not taking AP macro until senior year so I couldn’t really tell you about the difficulty of the class. As long as you’re not putting your gpa at risk, I say go for it.

Thank you I think I will take the AP class
