AP Economics for Haas

I'm a little confused about the AP policy...so if I get 5's on both micro and macro, does this mean that when I'm applying to Haas in my sophomore year, I don't have to take Economics? How would this change if my backup major is Economics?

You are correct: Haas requires a 5 on both AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics to allow applicants to not take Econ 1. The economics department requires at least a 4 on both tests to allow students to skip Econ 1. So, assuming that you have at least a 4 on both tests, both majors will allow you to skip that class.

A few more things:

Both majors require you to take at least some form of intermediate micro- and macroeconomic theory, so if you don’t feel comfortable taking those classes without Econ 1 (and you can flip through syllabi/textbooks or talk to people to get an idea), you may want to take Econ 1 anyway as preparation.

If you have a good score on one test but not another, you may want to look into taking the other one (i.e. the one with the bad score) at a community college over the summer, since both majors will allow to combine AP scores and community college credit (assuming you do well enough in both) to pass out of Econ 1. However, Haas only counts community college credit for pre-requisites before you come to Berkeley, which is why I noted that you’d need to do it over the summer (though even that I’d confirm), at least for Haas.

If you knew enough econ to 5 both, don’t bother with econ 1. idk if it’s because of my professor, but I have learned NOTHING new…and have a B.
