AP Economics

I know that you get a Waiver for Econ 001/002 with a 5 on AP Macro and AP Micro. If I would be taking these AP tests this year, is it worth it to take them, or just take Econ at Penn?

As usual, it depends on what you’re looking for. The Econ waiver will let you take other advanced/more interesting classes, however you may be looking to use econ 1/2 classes to pad your GPA (similar to how many students take Calc again to pad their GPAs).

Personally, I would take the two AP classes now, since this will provide you with something of a head start in Econ or at least free up two credits.

This is about taking the tests, not the classes. I already took the class. By the way, the waiver doesn’t give me any credits. this is why i was wondering. would it help if i’m looking for an economics minor, or does it have no bearing since i have to still take a certain amount of credits to get the minor?

Depends, do you want to take cool classes or the ones you already took?

“Waivers obtained through the AP, A-levels, or IB exams can be converted into credits if a student plans to major or minor in Econ after successfully completing Econ 101, one 200-level course, plus two other econ courses above the introductory level courses. Note that if a student converts waivers for both Econ 1 and 2 to credits in this way, and has a 2.0 GPA, he or she will have earned a Minor in Economics.”

It looks like taking the AP tests is useful if you want the minor in Econ. After getting the waivers and taking the upper level courses, you get retroactive credit. So you take 4 courses at Penn for the 6 course minor.

woah that sounds good! can you link me to the website?

Yup here ya go: [Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate | UPenn Economics Department](http://www.econ.upenn.edu/undergraduate/placement)

wait i forgot to ask one big thing: does an Economics Minor do anything for me? does it boost a resume, increase job prospects if i end up deciding to go into something business-related or join the FBI or CIA, or does it really do anything? i’m trying to see if it’s worth spending the $180 on 2 AP tests (macro and micro) or not.

^
no minors don’t mean much
it’d be better to get a dual degree or spend your time elsewhere

what do you mean spend my time elsewhere? so do you think it’s not worth it to take the two AP tests?

well if you might dual-degree then go ahead and take them because you can skip into more interesting classes

I disagree that “minors don’t mean much.” Sure it might not get you a job, but it could help. Someone who minors in a foreign language could be very appealing. Whatever you minor in, if it is applicable to the job, it shows you have some background in that area.
