Which would admissions more prefer is what I'm asking I guess, say I had a choice between AP Economics and a Physics class. The physics class is just a run-of-the-mill class but is still a core science, while Economics is an elective but it does have the tempting AP attached to it. Which would be preferred as far as aiming for a more rigorous schedule for college apps?

Do you have a passion for Science or Economics? Colleges won’t care for ONE extra AP Class. Do what you like best.

If given a choice, always go with AP. It’s a national standard vs a local standard, the national standard will carry more weight.

At many schools, AP Econ would be part of a normal set of core required courses fulfilling a social studies requirement. So, as between that and AP Physics, I’d say take the one that interests you more or the one with the better teacher. If AP physics isn’t offered, then AP Econ would be the better choice(to achieve highest rigor), so long as you still have 4 years of science at the highest level offered by your school upon graduation.

In a broader context, I’d say it’s best make it a priority to take the hardest courses offered in core courses. In addition to that, colleges like challenging electives. But, avoid overloading and risking your GPA.
