Hey everyone! I thought I'd just ask a quick question to all the juniors out there: How difficult is your AP English class?? Also, I was wondering how your teachers grade, what you do in class, etc.

I've always liked English...that is, until this year. It's just so stressful and impossible to "enjoy" all the reading we have to do. In my class, we read 900 page novels and write essays. I know we're just being prepared for college, but it is sooo much reading!!! We had to turn in notes from the last novel we read and everyone failed that assignment. We were told to "take good notes for our benefit" and my teacher collected them and counted it as an essay grade...ugghh. Well, enough of my complaining :) It's your turn! lol

Can IBers respond too? :o

haha sure!! why not? :)

We mostly practice writing. We haven’t read many books but when we do, they usually come in the form of projects…with quite a few essays attached in the projects.

My AP English class isn’t too difficult. We have about a 4-5 page paper every week to a week and half. We take a long time to get through books though, but we often write more than one paper about the same book (just a different theme, motif, etc.) For instance, it took us a while to get through King Lear, but that’s because my teacher had us map multiple motifs throughout the entire play. (I hated king lear by the end of it) Finally, we have maybe one in-class AP style prompt so that we can further our writing skills under time limits.

My teacher tries to make us annotate because its a five person class and she thinks that the discussions will suffer…but they don’t. As AP students, I think most of us have mastered the tool of ********ting.

Sorry to hear about you english class though. that sucks :(

My AP English is a waste of my time! She uses the mcas grading, 1-d, 2-c, 3-b, 4-a which is very annoying seeing as how it’s an ap class not an mcas prep! My grades fluctuate anywhere from a 2- to a 4+ and I don’t change my style of writing…so not sure what her issue is, I don’t think she likes my class much. The class is very slow especially after taking apush the semester before and I am very unmotivated. So far I have put in zero effort and have a b+, which will easily become an a by the end of the quarter20. We’ve read 5 books (my school has block scheduling so I’ve only had the class for a little over a month). It’s a large ap class about 20 kids so it’s very hard to get a good discussion grade when everyone is trying to talk. We do a multiple choice section of the ap test on fridays and so far they’ve been easy and I’ve done well on the esssays she’s given us, but she tells us the topic a week or so in advance and talks about it so I feel like I’m getting nothing out of it if I have time to plan the essay out!

You guys all had way more work in AP English Language than I did… I read probably 4 books, and wrote 10 one page essays, maximum 10 essays, possibly less, all year. And I got a 4…

Yeah I always feel like the AP English classes aren’t so popularly discussed on threads like CC. But in my school, AP English III is by far the most difficult and stressful class of all. They regularly read anywhere from 20 to 90 pages a night and get at least one essay a week (the teacher gives an essay on the first day of school). Though she actually teaches and grades fairly.

I think I may be screwing myself over by taking it next year, but I did surprisingly well in my freshman honors English class (also very difficult, second only to the AP Englishes) because it forced me to work so hard.

Just out of curiosity, how many books have you read in your AP class this year?

We’ve read about 10 or 11, I don’t really remember

I am highly disappointed in my AP English Lang class this year. We have read The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible, that’s it. I signed up for the class anticipating lots of reading and writing, and instead we do busy work that has nothing to do with the course.

I agree with Rip… so far we’ve read like 3 books and done 300 freaking busywork packets about AP nonsense. I took the class to help become a critical thinker and reader, not to prepare for some exam…

The OP is likely about AP Literature; ^ your classes are probably Language if you don’t read books too much.

@blang: We’ve read about 7 books so far and we just finished “The Fountainhead.” We had to read “The Scarlet Letter” over summer and the essay/project was due on the first day of school :/

Ours is hard!! We read a lot too and do a lot of essays and busy work and not enough exam preparation. The multiple choice we do is actually quite difficult…

Sent from my iPhone using CC

we’re taking our third practice AP exam next week. other than that, we don’t take any multiple choice tests. i hope i can get at least a 4 on the AP exam though. on the first two practice ones, i did surprisingly well on the multiple choice, but not on the essays…

My AP english 11 class is not too challenging…

We’ve only read Song of Solomon (summer reading book), Scarlet Letter, Huck Finn, and right now we are finishing up The Great Gatsby

We spent a long time studying poetry and literary terms and most of our grade is based on short homework assignments since we rarely have tests and so far have only written 2 papers

My class is reading the great gatsby right now as well. Your class sounds pretty relaxed though. Only 2 papers?? Haha lucky you!!

My son’s AP English Language class is so bad, it’s inspiring him to work harder in physics, so he can invent a time machine and go back in time and throw a harpoon through Herman Melville. Send your donations to The Melville Must Be Stopped Foundation.

His quote: “Never have so many read so much for so little action”.

His goal (after the time machine): Get a letter of recommendation from his current teacher next year, and then ask him to revise it. Then get it back and ask him to revise it again.
