AP English and Language Composition

Hi. I am going to take the above test this year. I am not sure exactly what books for this subject are highly recommended, but if someone can just tell me a book that helped them get a 4 or 5, it would greatly be appreciated. Right now i have the Kaplan one from when my brother went through the course (3 years ago).

cliffsnotes

Thank you very much...what did you get on the test anyway?

gosh, i bought like all of them b/c i had no idea which ones were the best....barron's is pretty good, i also got "5 steps to a 5" and REA but barron's is the best I think for the test. I got a 4 but right after taking the test i thought i got a 2! so i was happy when i got my score....by the way i am definitely more of a math/science person than an english person if that changes anything, this was a pretty hard test for me so i think getting barron's is worth it.

Thank You Very Much

Hmmm I got the Kaplans one and im pretty sure im gonna buy Cliff notes or Barrons!Thanks..hopefully i can get more advice.

You really don't need a book for this test, but a lot depends on the strength of your HS English course. I got a 5 with no actual prep. I just don't think it's something you can really study for, beyond knowing the definitions of basic literary terms.

I agree. If you're an A student in AP English and a good writer, you don't really need to prep. I got a 5 as well, with zero prep, other than some drills our English teacher did so we knew what to expect.

Just because you are in the AP class, does not mean that you do not need to prep. In my AP class, we did timed writings each week, but hardly worked on the multiple choice. Hopefully your teacher will go over what the AP readers expect out of your essays. Your teacher should also make you do lots of timed writings and timed multiple choice. If you feel that your teacher isn't doing what he or she should, then do some prep on your own.

What if you're just taking the Honors class because the school doesn't offer AP English for juniors? I kinda want to know which book is better for self-prep.

ic..well just in case my teacher doesnt cover something, or I really want practice, are there any good books anyway?

you might just want to go on cb's site and get some of the essay prompts and mc's that are available.

I used Kaplan, but didn't have enough time to really go through it. I wish I could be of more help.

One thing -- the AP does not want people organizing their essays by device. Organize them by paragraph. Try not to be too formulaic, but do have an intro, and just try to get in a conclusion.

Thank you very much for the advice! I do have Kaplans! GOnna get cliffnotes and the barrons maybe.
