I absolutely LOVED that class because I love writing and analyzing. If that's not your thing, you HAVE to practice writing under time constraints. That's a pretty big problem for a lot of people I know. When you have a take-home essay, time yourself. Just TRY to do it in 35 minutes, for practice.
Also, DO the recommended reading. ASK questions. Participate in discussions, even if you aren't sure if you're right. You're more likely to remember and understand if you're participating.
Good luck!

If you know a discussion is coming up, try to write down a few ideas. If it's on a section of reading or on a novel, write down your thoughts and questions. That way when it's time to say something, you have something to say!

timed writes get easier a the year goes along. try to find a couple literary devices that prove what the author is trying to get across. my teacher helped in the beginning to get us comfortable but after that it was all up to us.

The only time where I actually wrote those essays on time, was during the exam. It took me like 1 hr to write 1 essay, when practicing.. (it was initially 1.5 hrs lol)
But then, I got a 2.. so yeah..

for me ap lang was a complete joke. we just took a bunch of practice tests and wrote like 2 essays the whole year...and vocab tests. there was like no homework at all and most of the class passed the ap exam. some teachers just like to make relatively easy concepts difficult, mine was the opposite.

guys, ive been in this class for almost 3 weeks now and I think the grading is so strict. I got a 27/45 on a vocab test and a 19/30 on a quiz. Im actually pretty strong in english though, and there were a lot of people in the other class who failed the vocab test also. I was wondering why is AP english lang and comp so hard and what other kind of stuff do you do in this class thats hard/and or easy stuff that bolsters ur grade? Plus any more tips.advice?

just get through it. assuming you have a decent teacher, by the time you get to the AP test, the AP test will be easy. i was in the same situation as you and the class just got progressively easier.

You are in the same boat with 95% of the AP Eng (Lang and Lit) kids at my school. We have the same teacher for both, and she is insanely hard. But worth it. How often do you write essays? We write a 15-20 minute essay (about 3/4-1 a page long) almost every day, and she grades them extremely hard. They are often on the previous night's reading, so it encourages you (unless you want to fail) to read. Ask your teacher or a friend for prompts on the books you are reading and practice at home. Try to use as many devices and transitions as possible to enhance the writing. Be critical of it, I know it's hard when you thought you wrote a masterpiece.

Also, get practice with multiple choice. Start off with SAT practice tests, move up to Pre-AP work, and then do old AP exams. But take your time or you will get overwhelmed.

Those are the only ones I have off the top of my head.

wow, lifeunfolding, that seems real rigorous.

Like the teacher told us we would get timed writings about once every two weeks, and some of them we can take them home and edit them.

Its not only timed writings thats killin me, its everything from the vocab tests and stuff, its not merely memorizations, but its really tough grading and its crazy.

I wonder how lots of ppl in here in CC take like 4 AP classes a year and still do well in AP english language.

When I took that course last year I didn't even study. I don't think you really can. As long as you practice the test a few times (multiple choice like 4 times) and do AP writes once or twice a month the test is cake

I also think one of the keys IS vocabulary. In essays, don't settle for an OK word, find the best word for the sentence. I use this little thesarus sp everyday, and it's awesome. Get one and it will improve your writing by leaps and bounds (if you use it correctly). Get one of those SAT word books and work in it, because those have a lot of great words to learn and use. Vocabulary is also important for the reading sections, which can often be verbose and extremely boring.

And yeah, the class is rigorous. It has been my toughest class this year and last simply because you can't goof off or not care, because even if you do that for only one period...it kills your grade and it's hard to make it up. But, it's probably a good thing because it really makes me concentrate and do my best everyday.
