AP English Language Exam Thread

^ that’s exactly what I did: described the most important factors–social, political, economic

nope ur definately wrong sorry
ur overthinking the prompt
they want to see u synthesize an essay based on the topic and be able to adapt and identify sources etc.

space exploration was definately not irrelevant, trust me ive seen a similar prompt about wat museum curators shuold consider most importnt and ive read sample 8s and 9s…societal observations should be reserved for the argumentation essays

fastbreak ive just saw ur other post…i think ur too broad minded…they want to see you write bout that topic or else they would hve said ANY…the directions are straitfoward and not too difficult.

a style analysis essay is supposed to examine a writers style regarding purpose, tone, diction, syntax, rhetorica strategy, mood and its overall effectiveness, it is meant to demonstrate to graders that u can analyze and recognize wrting stylee

u hav definately gotten the wrong idea/impression from these prompts

Titann, I didn’t use that anomalous approach for the synthesis essay(I know it wasn’t what the graders were looking for, but I do think it makes the most sense.) For Wilson’s essay however, I did mention – in the intro and conclusion – how his satire, by extension, applied to the deadlocked debates that surround many controversial issues. Do you think that’s still too much of a stretch, though?

The MC was easy, so with any luck it won’t matter if he was too broad or not.

jesus christ, i did really well on the 2007 released exam and i didn’t even think the MC was THAT easy. am i over analyzing it or something?

Without going into specifics, I felt like I had a 100% on it until the last passage and then 50/50’ed two of them…It was cake compared to the ones we had done in class.

I wouldn’t say it was cake, but it was much easier than all the practice passages we did in my class. It asked very few questions about rhetorical strategies and meanings of words, and focused more on the comphrehension in my opinion

Hopefully I got a 5. Either way, It’s SUMMER NOW!

Easy 5 for all?

I don’t know about that. English isnt really my thing, so i know i didnt get a 5. But historically, AP Lang and AP Lit have some of the smallest percentages of 5’s.

I liked what I said for the synthesis: I talked about the definition of government/Locke’s Social Contract–basically discussing the Space Race and how at one time it was important for government to spend the money to protect citizens from Soviet satellites, but how the threat has disappeared now and that no more money should be spent. My second point was refuting the first source about how money filters down and would stimulate the economy.

For what it is worth, I think the prompt allowed you to take a position about the major issues, and as long as you did that you could argue for/against space travel. If your argument for/against travel was bigger than your reasons…then you will lose some points. As long as you developed your reasons-you’re good. It sounds to me like most of you have it-like usual. I hope it turns out well.

abkgirl: I’m a big fan of Locke and have used him in quite a few of my english essays, but I don’t see what his social contract theory adds to your argument.

Multiple choice was very easy. Seemed like it focused a lot more on reading comprehension than style analysis and the “roman numeral” questions that i hate so much. I don’t remember if I skipped any or not, but I’d say I got in the 40-48 range correct.

Synthesis- Very easy. Doing DBQ’s in APWH all year was the best preparation for the synthesis type essay. haha. I used two main issues: Economic concerns and Ethics (stewardship) Score: probably an 8

Analysis- This one was challenging… I think I said that the author’s satirical style was built on simplified diction, disgusted tone, and tricolon? can’t really remember…but I basically asserted that the argument was pointless as the two sides continually battered each other but failed to address the issues they stood for.
Score: 7-ish?

Persuasive- Loved this prompt and think my essay was good, but I didn’t use any literary examples. I don’t know if that’s bad or not…Think I, basically, said that it brings out talents by eliciting resiliance, making one strive for higher status, and building mental toughness.
I’m kicking myself for not using the line: “Adversity is like a photograph, as one must use the negatives to develop.” Grrrr. Stupid writer’s block got me there. haha.
Score: 7-ish?

Lookin’ like a 5?

Im taking the make-up test tomorrow…what should I review?

Does anyone have an old Multiple Choice test? That would really help :)

Question for the argumentative and synthesis essays: on one practice test we were asked to write two POVs and support them, and then choose which one was best and say why… I think it was argumentative, and it said that directly in the instructions for that one test, but didn’t for the others from different years. Should you usually do that? Qualify… instead of go for one side?

And is Kaplan easier or harder than the real MC?

Kaplan is harder than the real MC, IMO. Our teacher gave us a practice kaplan, and i took the 2001 exam, and the real one was a lot easier.

Yeah, and Kaplan’s answers I would argue are kinda ehhh sometimes. Plus, the passages they give you are like twice as long as the actual ones. But, not like that matters because AP Lang is over !
