I am strongly considering taking this examination without having a class to specifically prepare for it. I am in 11th grade Honors English, and AP English Literature at my school is only offered to 12 graders. I will take it and the exam next year.
I have looked at some practice MC questions for the AP English Language examination, and they do not look too difficult. I consider myself a fairly strong english student, scoring a 33 on the English ACT as a sophomore with a 30 reading score. I read a lot of books and feel that I have well above average writing skills.
I am apprehensive about the fact that I will have 4 other AP exams to prepare for this school year, including Calculus AB, Physics C Mechanics, Psychology, and Chemistry. I do not want the AP English Language test to be a huge burden for me or to cause me much unneeded stress.
Please advise. Is it really that difficult of an examination? I will consider a score of 4+ a success. How much preparation would that call for, with what I have said about myself, do you think I could I do it?
Thanks

Don’t judge the AP Lang exam based on the questions and what you get on the ACT. Have you read the passages? Many of them are hard. The AP Lang exam is harder than the SAT CR, and that in turn is harder than the ACT reading portion.
Nonetheless, it is still possible to get 4+ without taking the class. Get a prep book such as CliffNotes. Take a diagnostic test first before deciding. It might be harder than you think.

My prep for AP Lang:
- Read about 10 sample essays (never wrote one of my own).
- Did about 30 multiple choice the night before.

I got a 5. Why? Because I’m good at English. If you’re good at English, don’t fret.

I think you can easily get a 4+ without taking a class, if reading comes naturally to you. The hardest part of the test in my optinion is the essays. Make sure you’re ready to write three lengthy essays all within a very short period of time, and make sure you read a lot of sample essays to see what they’re looking for.

If you can write well (and quickly!), you will do well. We had a practice MC test at my school a week before. I missed over half the questions. I hardly missed any on the actual test. You honestly don’t need a class for it. Twas a joke. 5.

edit: when I mean quickly, at least for me, i wrote three pages for each essay, and my handwriting requires magnification to read.
