I've heard different things as to whether or not to self-study AP Lit, but I've basically decided I'm gonna do it anyways. My SAT Verbal/CR is strong enough that I feel like I won't do too badly on multiple choice (I hope). I'm planning on reading around five classic books, and hopefully the AP Lit teacher at my school will grade a few of my essays. On that note, does anyone have any suggestions about the structure of the AP Lit essays? How specific do the examples/evidence need to be, and how much generalization can you have (especially in the Question #3)? Does your thesis really have to describe your essay, or just answer the question? Also... is it okay to kind of make up/exaggerate your analysis of the work?

And just generally, how do you analyze books? I annotate, but even then I don't feel like I'm reading as much into the novel as they do on the AP Exam. And I'm not sure if I could find a medium for discussion about novels.
If you have any other suggestions about self-studying AP Lit, I'd love to know that too :)
