<p>if you're referring to the essay questions on the english lit test - which is what i assume you're referring to - of course not. you just have to be able to remember main motifs, characterization, important symbols, things like that. </p>
<p>for example - discussing Christian symbolism in "waiting for godot" is much more important than being able to recall a few exact quotes from it.</p>
<p>yea, you aren't required to use direct quotations.</p>
