AP English Lit

How hard and rigorous is this class? I am a sophomore right now, and I know AP English Lit's usually a senior class, but I am planning on taking it junior year because I have to skip English 11 due to some unforeseen circumstances. Would you recommend that I make a jump from Honors English 10 to AP English Lit, with no AP English Lang in between? Tell me what the class is like at your school. I know it varies at each high school, but I'd still love to hear anyone's perspective. Thanks.

So are you taking Lang in Senior year? I see no reason to not take both unless you’re graduating early.

Anyway, you could probably take English classes in a million different orders. They’re all the same. A 12th grader doesn’t write or read significantly better than an 11th grader. Besides that, both classes are easy. In my school, AP English is practically the default.

I am probably graduating early, that’s what I was referring to when I said “unforeseen circumstances”, actually. That’s why I have to take English 11 over the summer and go straight to AP English Lit in order to fulfill my credits and be eligible for graduation.

Thanks though. I agree that I’ve heard AP English Lit is easier which is ironic because it actually sounds a lot harder. I’m kind of scared about being with a whole bunch of seniors who are probably more experienced from taking AP English Lang and I’ll just be really dumb next to them because all the experience I have is lame ol’ Honors English 10.

^ I didn’t take the class because the teacher was discriminational towards Spanish speaking kids

but I took the AP test, and I did well, got a 3.

The clas is not so hard

Depends on the school. Going to put it into perspective a little here: At my school, we have two AP Lit teachers, both of whom are excellent teachers.

Teacher A is known as the more “traditional” teacher; she teaches the test. Practice MC, practice essays, read the books, reading quizzes, etc. She’ll get you a 4-5 on the exam, most likely. However, it’s quite hard to pull out an A in her class. The work, on the other hand, is not overwhelming.

Teacher B is known as the “crazy ■■■■■■■” teacher. Weird assignments, weird teaching methods, but everything he does has a purpose. Gives essay prompts when he’s absent and rarely gives MC practices. He doesn’t teach the test, but he does teach life skills, which sounds weird until you’ve had him. Um. Ridiculous amount of work first semester; let’s just say having to type 30-40 pages of single-spaced poetry analysis every other week *sucks/I. Jumped a ten page paper on us the first week of school. More crazy stuff, but everyone pretty much gets an A or B because he manipulates grades to help us succeed; plus, he thinks grades are pointless. Sort of. Second semester’s a joke. Students usually get 4-5s on the exam, but I think that’s because he drops all the kids he thinks won’t get a 4-5 after first semester…maybe.

I have the second teacher. It is definitely more rigorous than my AP Lang class was last year. The people with the first teacher seem to think the level of difficulty is the same as AP Lang though.

In other words, talk to people who’ve had the class before, learn a bit about the teacher, etc. Good luck!
