Do you think there is any correlation between AP English Language and SAT Critical Reading? In other words, is there a SAT score range that accompanies a certain AP grade? And how would you rate the relative difficulty of the two multiple choice sections. Because I scored a 5 on AP English but I got a 680 in CR. Did I just have a bad CR day? lol

I got a 5 on the AP exam and a 730 on Critical Reading. I honestly thought the AP multiple choice section was much easier than the CR section. I don’t see there being a correlation between these two scores being that the AP exam is 50% essay based and CR has no essay component.

^ And the AP has no vocabulary section.

True, true.

Yeah I’m with NYEM, I got a 5 on AP Lang and a 710 on CR, so there’s not really a correlation. The AP Lang multiple choice was fairly straightforward and we had a good amount of time to finish it. Although I think the passages on SAT are easier, the time pressure/vocab on SAT CR can be killer.

except a 5 is not an 800.

4 on AP and 570 on CR

I don’t think there’s any correlation really. Vocab killed me on CR.

730 CR and 4 on AP Lang. The last essay nuked my house.

4 on AP Lang and 630 on CR.

AP English MC is easier than CR MC. I agree with cornetking222: the last essay probably screwed me since I probably didn’t have any strong evidence.

I received an 800 on CR and a 5 on both the English Language and Literature exams (taken in 2009 and 2010, respectively).

AP English multiple choice is not necessarily easier than the SAT Critical Reading section, but the fact that you are given a grade on a 1-5 scale versus an 800 point scale (proceeding in increments of 10, but still more definite than the AP’s method) might be the reason for some of the differences in scores.

I don’t believe there’s a definite range, but a strong English student shouldn’t have too much trouble scoring in the higher percentiles of the CR section, so long as they are acquainted with the ins and outs of the exam. Same goes for the AP.

Not at all. I did not practice at all for the CR section but found it easy because I was very well acquainted with multiple-choice reading comprehension tests. Perhaps you only need a little more practice to familiarize yourself with the test. Chances are that you did better on the AP because you knew how to work the exam and what types of answers to give.

Really? I only scrambled for time in the math section; generally speaking, I finished all my CR sections early and went to sleep. SAT vocabulary, I think, is easier than AP vocabulary.

Feel free to disagree. ;)

Well, I got a 5 on the AP English Language Exam and only a 730 on the CR section. I think the reason is that a lot more people take the SAT than the AP English exams, so your score, along with a more discrete scoring scale, is compared to many more people, so there are those discrepancies

AP English is much easier to score well on. It also does not affect admission to colleges (maybe a little for some schools).

5 on AP Lang, 760 on SAT CR

^^^ Only a 730? I wish I had a 730 myself…

5, 740.

The multiple choice section of the AP felt so much easier.

Hmmm…I actually felt worse at the few practice questions for the AP that I looked at (I cam across a review book in my house since both my parents taught/teach it) and got a 780 CR.

5 on AP Lang, 740 on CR. The Vocab in CR killed me. I always manage to miss only 1 or 2 from the passages for CR, but my vocab varies from 0 to 5. My friend got all the vocab, and got 800 (with 2 passage mistakes), I missed 2 on passages, 2 on vocab, and got 740.
I really wish 5 = 800.

How can all of you guys say the last essay was a killer?!?!?! I think it was absolutely the best essay prompt ever. There’s so much to write about humor. I mainly focused on satirical side of humor, and talked about modern cartoon shows like the Simpsons, Futurama, and South Park (avoided family guy cuz it’s a bit unsophisticated sometimes) despite not being an avid fan of these shows. In my other two paragraphs, i talked about Thomas Nast (the newspaper/cartoonist guy who busted Boss Tweed, must’ve learned it in APUSH), and A Modest Proposal (it’s a AP Lang essential!). The synthesis essay was a bit tedious though.

my brother received a 4 on the ap english but an 800 on the CR, but then again, he was never too good at timed writing, so that may be it.

I got a 5 on the AP English and 800 on CR as well. IMO, I found AP to be easier although CR was not difficult either. As for vocab, that is my favorite section since it’s an easy few points for me.
